  • What's Included
  • Are Universal Powerline Bus (UPB)-controlled lights or appliances in one area of your house having trouble receiving signals from UPB transmitters in another area of the house? Because most homes have 2-phase 220V power that splits into two separate 110V legs, sometimes UPB signals have a hard time making the transition from one leg to the other. But connect the Wire-in UPB Phase Coupler in your home's circuit breaker panel, and it will bridge UPB signals between the two power lines in your home easily, allowing virtually all of your UPB receivers to respond to UPB signals. This universal phase coupler even passes X10 signals from one electrical phase to the other, and it also features built-in surge suppression to protect components on both electrical phases from surge damage.

Universal Phase Coupler Also Passes X10 Signals
Besides UPB signals, this universal phase coupler can also pass X10 and broadband frequencies. This is extremely convenient for homes using multiple automation technologies since only one phase coupler is required to deliver signals from one electrical phase to the other.

The Breaker Panel Wire-in UPB Phase Coupler is designed to be installed into a Cutler-Hammer, Square-D, Murray, or GE residential load center.

Inverting Phase Coupler Compensates for Inverted Signals
Unlike conventional phase couplers, the Wire-in UPB Phase Coupler is an inverting phase coupler, meaning that it compensates for inverted signals reflected back from street-side power distribution transformers. Inverted signals can have a canceling effect on source signals even when using conventional phase couplers, an issue eliminated by the Wire-in UPB Phase Coupler. A universal inverting phase coupler is recommended on every main power panel and sub-panel in a residence to ensure maximum signal strength. A Wire-In UPB Phase Coupler is also available that installs in a junction box.

As per the manufacturer, this is not made for X10 . . . Review by FarmerBob
As per the manufacturer, this is not made for X10 . . .

. . . and it did nothing for my X10. After talking to the manufacturer I was told it's not made to be used with X10 and got an RMA from them that surprised SH although they said that made it easier for them to RA it. SO if it didn't work for me SH would not have RA'd it? The manufacturer said that this was primarily made for their systems and some others just happen to work too. I bought another unit from X10.com that is made for X10 and was to return this unit. But I was not able to return it since we were not able to get our new electrical inspection done before the RMA lapsed. The design and installation is genius and impressed the inspector, as I hoped, that's why I didn't swap it and it made that part of the inspection go without a hitch. But that's all. So I have two units and the one from X10 works like a dream. This did not work at all. I purchased it after reading the reviews that were posted here that said it did work with X10. Well it's not made to and those who have had success are just lucky. For X10 go with an X10 unit.

If you are not comfortable turning off house power and taking the cover off your circuit breaker panel, and installing a breaker, this is not the product for you. Unless you are going to hire an electrician. By the time you pay for an electrician you'd have paid less if you bought the same product in the two phase plug format package. Plugs right in where your dryer is.

That said, I have no problem replacing or installing circuit breakers in my panel. If you want to learn how, search YouTube for some great instructional videos on the subject.

The UPB installed in 10 minutes total. Snapped right into the power rails, just like a circuit breaker would check to make sure your breaker box takes this format of breaker!

Turned the power back on and Yipee, no more dropouts on those far off Insteon devices. Rather than intermittent loss of com, now the com is rock solid.

When I ordered this unit I did not know that you should order one for each CB panel in your home. Have ordered a second one although all the problems went away with only one installed...

Very clean installation. Excellent performance. You DO NOT need a box other review to install this unit in as it installs directly into your circuit breaker panel.

The directions that come with it tell you to put 15 amp circuit breakers between the UPB and the power rails, but its not clear to me why. This unit is designed to go directly into the power rails, just like a circuit breaker. Perhaps because the directions are for three different units dumb way to save money, UPB those circuit breakers are for some other unit.

Very clean installation and great performance, for the right customer.

This product is the best. Solved all the problems immediately. One month in and doing exactly what is is supposed to do. Simple to install. Goes in to your breaker panel just like a breaker. You must have 2 open positions next to each other in the panel. If you don"t know what that means, you have no business opening a breaker panel. Doing so can be very dangerous if you are not trained. Find someone who is.

Product works well as described. All my X-10 now work reliably. Installation was not trivial, however. One, the product design is not optimal, as it is slightly too large for almost every mounting box I could find. Contrary to the web site suggestion for mounting in a 3-gang plastic box, this does not work because the boxes are not wide enough. Luckily I found a metal box (Hubbell #686 3-Gang 2.5" Deep Switch Box) that accommodates this device. Wiring was not difficult. Note that you do NOT need two DEDICATED 15A breakers, you can use two existing breakers connected to other circuits. Good value.
