  • The Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam IP Camera is the newest innovation in secure home monitoring. It combines all of the greatest features from previous generations of IP cameras and adds the latest technology. The Vstarcam delivers them all into a compact wireless IP camera that has a user-friendly installation and remote access to view and record everything that happens in your home or office - all from your smartphone, tablet or PC. To top it off - this product is available for under $100!

For outoor monitoring, consider using the Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam Wireless Outdoor HD IP Security Camera with Night Vision. Both cameras can be used and accessed together from the Eye4 suite of products as a whole home solution for monitoring your property both indoors and outdoors.

Using the Eye4 Cloud IP Camera downloads you can remotely monitor your property from:
    • a local Windows PC on your network using the Eye4 For Windows desktop program
    • any Windows PC with Windows Explorer (Active X Download required) connected to the Internet using the Eye4 For Web web browser
    • a smartphone or tablet using the Eye4 for iPhone or Eye4 For Android app
    •  with so many smartphones and tablets on the market, with various platforms and versions, the Vstarcam also has an alternative app to use if the Eye4 software doesn't work best for your device. This alternative app, VsCam is available for both iOS and Android.

    Remote Access
As with most IP / Network cameras, Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam IP cameras are designed to work with a specific suite of software and applications - and will work perfectly with the Eye4 and VsCam suite of products as described above. Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam IP cameras will not work with, nor are they intended to work with INSTEON for Hub, MobiLinc, or any other 3rd party software or application. This product is not compatible with Apple/Mac computers at this time.

    Wireless Networks and IP Cameras
The strength of any wireless connection between an IP camera and a wireless device such as a smartphone or tablet, especially when transmitting HD 720p resolution, is directly related to the quality of several things:
    • your wireless networking devices (modem, router, access point, etc.)
    • the bandwidth you have selected from your Internet Service provider where the camera will be located
    • cellular signal strength or the bandwidth available from the Wi-Fi connection you are remotely connected to
    • for an HD 720p video stream, your wireless device must also be capable of displaying video in HD 720p resolution

    720p High-Definition Resolution

Most IP cameras under $100 only offer a maximum resolution of 640x480 pixels - standard definition. The Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam comes in at a whopping 1280x720 pixels (720p) High-Definition (HD) for crystal clear video. Example of recorded video.

    Remote Pan / Tilt Control

With the Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam, you can remotely move the camera horizontally left and right (pan) and vertically up and down (tilt). It features a 350° pan and 120° tilt range of motion, and even offers up to 5 different presets so you can automatically go to specific areas that you have designated for viewing. From the iOS and Android apps you use fingure gestures to control the camera - simply swipe your figure to move the camera or pinch to zoom. The desktop software also allows similar control from the click of a mouse. It should be noted the Eye for Web browser application does not allow for control of the camera at this time.

Take Pictures and Capture Video in the Dark

If you're trying to keep an eye on things while you're away, you'll want to know what's going on day and night. The Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam features 12 infrared (IR) LEDs with IR Cut technology that will capture images in darkess down to 0.8 lux (equivalent to the amount of light from a full moon on a clear night) in full color - in other words, you'll have night vision! Images captured in lower than 0.8 lux will be in black and white.

    No Professional Installation Required

One of the more daunting tasks of installing an IP camera is the installation - that's a thing of the past. No more port forwarding or digging around and adjusting your router settings. It's Plug-n-Play - simply connect the camera to your wireless router, power it up and install the app on your smartphone or tablet. Then just follow a few steps (no programming at all) and in minutes you'll be able to disconnect the camera from the router and take full advantage of the wireless connection.

Automated Alert Notifcation, Recording and Screenshot

While other IP cameras limit you to remote viewing, the Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam does much more. The IP camera has a built-in, motion sensor with adjustable sensitivity. There is also an external alarm relay input/output, so you can add a sensor (motion or other) to the alarm input, and when activated, it will trigger the alarm output - possibley to set off a siren or send a signal to your security or home automation system. Manage these settings from your smartphone or tablet via the Eye4 app or from your PC or laptop using the Eye4 For Windows desktop program. Deliver an email notification, capture a screenshot, or record video of activity when motion is detected or the alarm input is activated. Additional sensor, siren, security and home automation systems all available separately.

View 4 Cameras at One Time

One of the coolest features of the Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam is the multi-camera view. From your smartphone or tablet, you can remotely view 4 cameras simultaneously. This eliminates the need to log in to different cameras from different apps or going back and forth between pages within an app to find a camera. You can see all the activity from a single screen. For advanced systems and users, the desktop software supports remote viewing of up to 81 cameras! When using a wireless system with multiple cameras, greater wireless bandwidth is required - remote access and streaming of four cameras simultaneaously will require a wireless router with a minuimum bandwidth of 450mbps.

    Talk and Listen

A built-in microphone and a built-in speaker allow you to remotely enjoy 2-way communication with someone at your home or office. While these are good for occasional use, the IP camera even has a 3.5mm microphone input and a 3.5mm audio output. So you can connect a professional microphone and hook the audio output up to an audio system for enhanced communication.

Additional Storage of Screenshots and Video

If storing images and videos on your smartphone, tablet or computer isn't enough, the Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam also provides you with the option of local storage. A built-in Micro SD card slot allows you to add up to 32GB of data directly on the camera. With the addition of a Micro SD card (sold separately), you have added piece of mind that your images and video can be backed up, just like a DVR..

    * Important Note: Smarthome recommends that you research your local and state laws related to audio and video surveillance before implementing this product. Also, if your network uses a wireless router provided by your cable or satellite provider this IP Camera (and most other IP camera's that allow remote access to your network) may not be compatible. This is because wireless routers provided by your cable or satellite company often restrict port forwarding and other wireless router configurations. Please contact your cable or satellite provider for information regarding this.

followed all instructions (in very bad English) and was able to get camera to finally work on the wifi by trial and error. I had to move the camera and lost the wifi connection in the process. I was never able to repeat the connection. I am returning this.

After a firmware update, one of my 4 unites became completely disabled. Smarthome directed me to the manufacture for support which is located in China which got me no results. Bottom line; If the unit has any issues after the 30 day return period, you own it. China wants me to send it to them to see if they are willing to fix it I pay shipping both ways which is significant and Smarthome wants nothing to do with the unit after the 30 days. This unit is less then 90 days old.

Oh by the way; 2 of these units out of 4 ordered were sent to me preconfigured to some other house. Smarthome gave me a partial discount on one of these units since it was clear that they were used but not on the 2nd unit. I guess it's a case of shared responsibilities. For some reason, I was expecting 4 new units to start with but ended up with 2 new, one used, and 1 paper weight.

This was very easy to set up and has great resolution even in low / no light. I do wish it had the ability to not only alarm on motion but to start recording.
    Overall a great camera.

Camera is now working as advertised. I say 'now' because for the first few days after purchase, the Eye4 website seemed to be down. I could not register an account, either with the Android or the Windows version. Eventually it all started working. The registration forms are crude... it is hard to tell if the website is responding or not.

The remote setup was as advertised: no port forwarding was needed I was using an actual router plugged into the cable modem. My installation is with a wired Ethernet connection, not wireless, so I cannot comment on wireless. The program found the camera on the LAN and read the ID immediately. Remote access to my phone worked right away.

On ANDROID phone: The Eye4 app is amateurish, but it does work. Pan & Tilt work, but app doesn't always recognize the command - you have to make a long motion for it to respond. Listen and Talk modes are good. The speaker is quite a bit louder than I expected.

The WINDOWS application seems like a better program than the ANDROID app. Things work smoother, the menus are intuitive.

The VStarCam PnP/VsCam Android app is much better than the Eye4 app. VsCam is all in Chinese but the interface is better and the audio is better, plus it connects to the camera faster. Audio with the VsCam app works like a Push-to-Talk, not like a regular phone. Use the QR scan code on the bottom of the camera to enter the camera ID.
The camera does click every time it switches from the regular to IR mode. But the picture is very clear and sharp.

I set up the camera in a few minutes. I used the app on the eye4 site to find the camera's IP. The camera URL won't open with Firefox, need to use IE. Downloaded the Active-x piece and got to the camera's web page. I set up most of the Alarm settings for motion, but it won't accept @domain.com for the user which my isp requires to send mail. Ok, so I try the Android App. Have to get it from the Play Store because the URL in the guide keeps timing out. Try to register using the app, Bad Engrish telling me is registered, please later.... So, I try the website eye4.so from my browser. Again, Firefox errors out, have to use IE. Very Bad Engrish on site, especially the security questions. Finally get registered there's no 'welcome' screen or anything once you click the Chinese characters at the bottom. Restarted browser and logged in, It doesn't find the camera. Tried the smartphone app again, it's Logining... and stay there forever.
The app that finds your camera on the network has an Outside URL, which points to xxxx.gocam.so. Gives an error that the account is not registered.
So, Over all the local browser based app works to view the camera, no internet access to camera unless you put it in a DMZ on your router to get to the web page.

I just got this camera today and set it up - here are my first impressions. As a comparison, I also have a Foscam FI8910W and a FI9821W V2. Both of these cameras work relatively flawlessly.

I purchased this camera because I thought it would be just like the Foscam FI9821W V2 with the added benefit of a GPIO Alarm block. I was hoping to interface the camera with my Elk M1 to announce visitors when the motion detection alarm went off. I quickly realized that there are some key features lacking from this camera. Namely, there is no ability to designate a specific motion detection area within the video i.e., only alarm when motion is detected only in that designated area. Second, I did not see an option to capture a pre-record of the alarm on the SD card. Third, I haven't seen an option for dual streams or even the ability to change the quality of the recorded video.

On the positive side, setup was VERY easy. The Eye4 mobile app is pretty impressive for an Asian OEM camera supplier. Once hooked into my network and powered, all I had to do was scan a QR code from the bottom of the camera and, voila, the camera was setup. If you would like to access the camera from your browser, the default port is 81 only found this after conducting a scan on my network. You can control all aspects of the camera natively within the app even firmware upgrades!. You can also control/setup the camera from an ActiveX applet in IE.

For most non-advanced users, the issues that I listed above may not be issues for you. My first impression is that this is a good effort by the manufacturer. Hopefully the issues I mentioned can be remedied with firmware fixes, but I am doubtful that will occur within my return window. This also gives me an appreciation for Foscam and their support team.
