For outoor monitoring, consider using the Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam Wireless Outdoor HD IP Security Camera with Night Vision. Both cameras can be used and accessed together from the Eye4 suite of products as a whole home solution for monitoring your property both indoors and outdoors.

Using the Eye4 Cloud IP Camera downloads you can remotely monitor your property from:
    • a local Windows PC on your network using the Eye4 For Windows desktop program
    • any Windows PC with Windows Explorer (Active X Download required) connected to the Internet using the Eye4 For Web web browser
    • a smartphone or tablet using the Eye4 for iPhone or Eye4 For Android app
    •  with so many smartphones and tablets on the market, with various platforms and versions, the Vstarcam also has an alternative app to use if the Eye4 software doesn't work best for your device. This alternative app, VsCam is available for both iOS and Android.

    Remote Access
As with most IP / Network cameras, Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam IP cameras are designed to work with a specific suite of software and applications - and will work perfectly with the Eye4 and VsCam suite of products as described above. Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam IP cameras will not work with, nor are they intended to work with INSTEON for Hub, MobiLinc, or any other 3rd party software or application. This product is not compatible with Apple/Mac computers at this time.

    Wireless Networks and IP Cameras
The strength of any wireless connection between an IP camera and a wireless device such as a smartphone or tablet, especially when transmitting HD 720p resolution, is directly related to the quality of several things:
    • your wireless networking devices (modem, router, access point, etc.)
    • the bandwidth you have selected from your Internet Service provider where the camera will be located
    • cellular signal strength or the bandwidth available from the Wi-Fi connection you are remotely connected to
    • for an HD 720p video stream, your wireless device must also be capable of displaying video in HD 720p resolution

    720p High-Definition Resolution

Most IP cameras under $100 only offer a maximum resolution of 640x480 pixels - standard definition. The Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam comes in at a whopping 1280x720 pixels (720p) High-Definition (HD) for crystal clear video. Example of recorded video.

    Remote Pan / Tilt Control

With the Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam, you can remotely move the camera horizontally left and right (pan) and vertically up and down (tilt). It features a 350° pan and 120° tilt range of motion, and even offers up to 5 different presets so you can automatically go to specific areas that you have designated for viewing. From the iOS and Android apps you use fingure gestures to control the camera - simply swipe your figure to move the camera or pinch to zoom. The desktop software also allows similar control from the click of a mouse. It should be noted the Eye for Web browser application does not allow for control of the camera at this time.

Take Pictures and Capture Video in the Dark

If you're trying to keep an eye on things while you're away, you'll want to know what's going on day and night. The Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam features 12 infrared (IR) LEDs with IR Cut technology that will capture images in darkess down to 0.8 lux (equivalent to the amount of light from a full moon on a clear night) in full color - in other words, you'll have night vision! Images captured in lower than 0.8 lux will be in black and white.

    No Professional Installation Required

One of the more daunting tasks of installing an IP camera is the installation - that's a thing of the past. No more port forwarding or digging around and adjusting your router settings. It's Plug-n-Play - simply connect the camera to your wireless router, power it up and install the app on your smartphone or tablet. Then just follow a few steps (no programming at all) and in minutes you'll be able to disconnect the camera from the router and take full advantage of the wireless connection.

Automated Alert Notifcation, Recording and Screenshot

While other IP cameras limit you to remote viewing, the Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam does much more. The IP camera has a built-in, motion sensor with adjustable sensitivity. There is also an external alarm relay input/output, so you can add a sensor (motion or other) to the alarm input, and when activated, it will trigger the alarm output - possibley to set off a siren or send a signal to your security or home automation system. Manage these settings from your smartphone or tablet via the Eye4 app or from your PC or laptop using the Eye4 For Windows desktop program. Deliver an email notification, capture a screenshot, or record video of activity when motion is detected or the alarm input is activated. Additional sensor, siren, security and home automation systems all available separately.

View 4 Cameras at One Time

One of the coolest features of the Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam is the multi-camera view. From your smartphone or tablet, you can remotely view 4 cameras simultaneously. This eliminates the need to log in to different cameras from different apps or going back and forth between pages within an app to find a camera. You can see all the activity from a single screen. For advanced systems and users, the desktop software supports remote viewing of up to 81 cameras! When using a wireless system with multiple cameras, greater wireless bandwidth is required - remote access and streaming of four cameras simultaneaously will require a wireless router with a minuimum bandwidth of 450mbps.

    Talk and Listen

A built-in microphone and a built-in speaker allow you to remotely enjoy 2-way communication with someone at your home or office. While these are good for occasional use, the IP camera even has a 3.5mm microphone input and a 3.5mm audio output. So you can connect a professional microphone and hook the audio output up to an audio system for enhanced communication.

Additional Storage of Screenshots and Video

If storing images and videos on your smartphone, tablet or computer isn't enough, the Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam also provides you with the option of local storage. A built-in Micro SD card slot allows you to add up to 32GB of data directly on the camera. With the addition of a Micro SD card (sold separately), you have added piece of mind that your images and video can be backed up, just like a DVR..

    * Important Note: Smarthome recommends that you research your local and state laws related to audio and video surveillance before implementing this product. Also, if your network uses a wireless router provided by your cable or satellite provider this IP Camera (and most other IP camera's that allow remote access to your network) may not be compatible. This is because wireless routers provided by your cable or satellite company often restrict port forwarding and other wireless router configurations. Please contact your cable or satellite provider for information regarding this.

I think SmartHome has better cameras. this is reasonably easy to setup, but repeatedly looses the password on my iOS and is slow to load/react when i want to view something. and when you have a little kid, you don't want to wait for a second more than nec. the presets have to be reset often. the rotating of the screen on your iOS often doesn't work. not a fan....

I tried this with an iPhone 4s and Mac computer. Basically USELESS!

Macs can't access this camera in any program or using the web browser page, since its not a standard interface. It uses a PC only, DirectX interface. This also means that the Insteon Hub can't access it.

The iPhone App V 2.2 will register the camera but the picture is distorted on the iPhone 4s everything looks tall and stretched, since its not a HD ratio like the iPhone 5x iPhones.

The landscape screen view uses finger swipes to pan/tilt. There are no buttons for fine adjustment so the smallest motion I could get was about 20 degrees.

The rest of the App is poorly laid out and confusing to use. The poor chinese to english conversions and thoughtless organization make it nearly impossible to figure out whether the App's references to Password refers to the online account or to the camera's internal password.

The App can't remember the camera and you have to add it every time you activate the App. Any presets for pointing it are lost. Sometimes it can't find the camera and you have to manually enter it using Qcode on the bottom of the camera. Finally the App failed to find the camera even when using Qcode unless it was connected to my router with an Ethernet cable. That was the last straw and its going back to Smarthome. I can't believe they put their name on this unfinished POS.

Arrived well-packaged and looking real cool.
Worked well with iPhone; had no problems. App simple and responsive.
But getting it synced with the iMac computer through a WiFi Router (commercial grade, recognizes all other web cams) proved impossible. The app the company had for Mac OS X download crashed repeatedly and would not work at all.
It is an off-brand, so none of the commercial apps for controlling security cameras would recognize it. Therefore I could not control it from outside my home, nor store any videos on the cloud.
And, worst of all, the tech support would not respond to any attempt at contact, electronically or telephonically. Without support being available I applied for an RMA, got one, and am returning a really nice-looking security camera today.

Good camera w features PTZ and HD - much better than static cameras. I was unable to set up acct w the enclosed software however was able to use another app that the company offers - Vstarcam, VsCam version 2.0. No account needed - fine with me as this is a foreign company. At first I bought two and will get two more. Set up was very easy with the VsCam app. Under 10 minutes per camera.

Initially hard to setup due to lack of detailed instructions. Once set up, everything works fine. A step by step video instruction dedicated to this particular product would be very helpful.

Camera works fine as described in your catalog and on-line. The instruction manual needs a lot of work and where it says to hold the reset button for 10 seconds make it 30 seconds or it will not work.

    Review of 75770

When I got an offer from Smarthome for the Vstarcam (T7838WIP) wireless IP camera with HD (720p) video for $85 it seemed like a good deal. I previously purchased a Wansview wireless IP camera with SD (480) video for $60 and expected a similar product with a higher resolution.

The Vstarcam web-based interface is fairly standard, allowing you to enter wifi passwords, set up IP address and port and so on. Pan and tilt controls work as expected. The main reason I purchased this product was the HD video. You can apparently only get HD video in a few limited ways:
    1) Using Internet Explorer with a special ActiveX control.
    2) Using the manufacturer's proprietary smartphone app when connected to the same wifi router.
    3) Using the manufacturer's proprietary Eye4 product when connected to the same wifi router.

I have been able to get HD video using Internet Explorer with the special ActiveX control from inside the house on my internal network. I have been able to get an HD image/video stream on my iPhone 4S using the app from inside the house, when connected to the same wifi router. I haven't been able to use the Eye4 software because my desktop computer is on a downstream router on a different subnet from the camera and that apparently prevents the Eye4 software from connecting.

When using any other browser the best video available is a very low quality down-sampled SD (480) stream. This video is substantially lower quality than the native SD video of the Wansview camera.

I use iSpy open source camera security software to monitor and record from my cameras. By trial and error I discovered a URL that allows me to get an MJPEG stream from the camera but the stream I get is the same low quality down-sampled SD (480) and does not allow me to monitor sound as I can on the Wansview. I can use the pan and tilt controls with iSpy.

The camera has a built-in email capability that sends a picture to a designated email address when motion is detected. Unfortunately the picture it sends is the same low quality down-sampled SD (480) image. The camera also only sends one picture when motion is detected (the Wansview sends several in a single message so you are more likely to see the motion that was detected).

The camera accepts a Micro SD card (up to 32GB) for on-board recording. Presumably this would record HD video. I have not tried this.

Since I purchased this camera for its HD capability and am unable to get an HD image in most of my preferred ways I can't recommend this camera for its HD image. Since the down-sampled SD image is poorer than my previous native SD camera I can't recommend this camera for its SD image. I'm hoping if I do get a Micro SD card and use it in this camera I will get good results that way.
