  • The Smarthome SELECT Hidden IR Repeater System allows you to use an existing infrared (IR) remote control to operate up to eight audio/video (AV) components located behind closed doors or walls in an entertainment cabinet or equipment closet. The built-in IR distribution technology gives you the ability to conceal, yet still control, bulky electronic equipment such as a cable or satellite receiver, stereo receiver, amplifier, CD player, DVD player, Blu-ray player, or virtually any component controlled by an IR signal. The system uses an IR Receiver to take in the IR signals from an existing remote control and distribute those signals via IR Emitters to AV components. No longer do you have to leave cabinet doors open or struggle to remotely access your hidden AV equipment, you'll be able to reliably control your hidden components from up to 40 feet away The result is the freedom to have an installation that offers a clean, modern look by keeping all the AV eyesores out of sight.

40 Foot Range Dual IR Emitters
    LED Indicator Light DIY Installation

An extended wireless range of 40 feet is 10 feet further than other similar products Less clutter with the same control, 4 wires with 2 IR Eitters instead of 8 wires with 1 IR Emitter A built-in LED indicator light on the IR Receiver lets you know the IR signal has been received Simple plug and play installation will have you in control within minutes

    How it Works

This convenient home theater accessory is easy to use and sets up in minutes, no electrician of professional installer required. Start by mounting the IR Repeater in your equipment cabinet using the included Velcro tape. Plug the 1/8 inch mini jack plug end of the IR Emitters into the repeater box and attach the other end to the IR window of each AV component you wish to control. Next, plug the 4-pin Connector from the IR Receiver into the IR Repeater box and place the other end in a location where it can receive line-of-sight signals from your IR remote control; ideally this will be on a shelf or on an exposed part of the cabinet. Double sided tape has been pre-installed on the IR emitters and the IR receiver to make this process easier. That's it, now you just use your remote control as you normally would, a confirmation LED indicator light on the IR receiver will let you know when the system has received a remote control command.

The included emitters can control many different A/V components. They're made of material that is transparent to IR light, so commands can still pass directly to individual components if desired. Each emitter cord is approximately six feet in length, with two emitters split off the of end; the emitter wires can be peeled away from each other to allow for a variety of mounting positions.

    System Notes

        •  When placed in an enclosed cabinet or closet, some AV components will require additional ventilation or a cooling fan
        •  Protect the IR Receiver from interference from Plasma, LCD, and LED TVs
        •  Protect the IR Receiver from excess ambient light, including direct sunlight, floodlights, halogen or fluorescent lamps
        •  Avoid IR emitter cables blocking equipment doors and slots that may need to be opened
        •  Attach the IR emitter directly to the component or to a shelf facing the component's IR eye (within 3 inches)
        •  Placing two IR emitters on the same component will not improve performance
        •  Do not attempt to open the power supply or IR repeater box, doing so will void your warranty
        •  The Hidden IR components are not weather-resistant, do not expose this system to moisture

Not a very good IR receiver. Angles are limited and chances of signal getting through is < 70%

Works great with TiVo Series 3 after a couple of tweaks. First, a few peculiar details about ordering and price. I ordered it from the Smarthome site, which has a Pay With Amazon payment option, that I chose, since it was the quickest and easiest. It was delivered in a few days as promised and I am as happy with Smarthome's service as I am with Amazon's. But here are the anomalies: The Smarthome price on its site was $40 I'm rounding all prices for simplicity, but when I paid for it the price was shown as $30. It was right around Xmas, when many prices go crazy, so I assume it was a short term price special. BUT as of today 12/30/2012, the price on the Smarthome site is still shown as $40, the Amazon price, as sold BY Amazon, is $49, and the Smarthome price as shown in two different places on the Amazon site is $40 AND $49! I'm sure those prices will change, and there is no way I know of I will be able to prove it in the future, but I've confirmed numerous times what I am writing is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!! I don't understand the pricing goofiness.

As to the repeater device: When I first installed it, it worked intermittently and would freeze up after a short time, i.e., stop working at all. The Repeater can control 8 separate boxes, but I am only using it with one, the TiVo I mentioned above, but I am not using it on a hidden TiVo in a cabinet. My TiVo box is in a low open shelf TV table at the wall past the foot of our bed, and the line-of-sight from the remote to the TiVo is obstructed by the bed clothes and the end of our mattress, especially when elevated by a pillow or our feet, so we had to raise the remote about 3-4 feet in the air and point it downward to make it work, which was frustrating my wife, to say the least. I figured a high mounted IR repeater receiver would do the trick, and it eventually did, with the tweaks.

The instructions say to find the IR Infrared eye on the component you want to control, saying to shine a flashlight into the front of the component and describing it as a small red disk. I couldn't see a small red disk so I contacted TiVo support by a chat and was quickly told the IR eye is at the right of the front panel window. When I looked with a flashlight I couldn't find an eye, but there is a one-half inch square. Turns out I had the small emitter in the wrong place, which worked, but not very well, but when I relocated the emitter over the eye/square, I encountered the same intermittent operation/freeze-up problem.

I eventually unscientifically theorized the IR beam from the remote control was confusing the TiVo box because it was causing the IR signal to arrive at the box through the repeater emitter AND from the remote directly, the two signals getting there a microsecond apart. I have no idea if my theory is correct, but I hung a folded piece of cardboard over the front of the TiVo, covering the square IR eye so the IR signal from the remote can't reach it, and all I can say IT WORKS!! So

Range from remote to your IR Sensor is way too close. I need to get up and get about 5 feet from your receiving IR to make it work. I am not satisfied with it's performance.

I have been using the Smarthome Hidden IR Repeater for about 2 months. It installed easily and has worked flawlessly for multiple devices (Motorolla DVR, Roku, Denon Receiver, Panasonic DVD Player)

Very disappointing. Nowhere on the website does it reveal that this product will not work with xfinity system (and several other systems, by the way). This fact is only found in extremely small print on the included paperwork. Even there it is not easily found. Smarthome would do everyone right by revealing this information in their advertising of the product on line. At least give me the opportunity to choose an item that will work in my home.

Very nice implementation - the distribution panel is small and easily concealed, and the infrared receiver is sleek and inconspicuous. Plenty of capability with 8 LED repeaters, easily installed and set up.

I bought the hidden repeater to use the home theater remotes on components that become hidden behind a motorized screen when it is down. It works beautifully with all of the components except for the Dish network controller. It wasn't specifically listed as one of the not supported components but I was leery that I might have trouble with it because the remote for Dish has two transmitters and the unit has three receivers. Overall it is a great little unit that I installed in less than 5 minutes.
