  • What's Included
  • This kit will prepare you to learn about the life cycle, insect biology, and caring for living Painted Lady butterflies (vanessa cardui). It is ideal for exposing and educating adults and children to the world of live insects. Watch as the eggs grow into caterpillars and how the caterpillars transform into beautiful butterflies. This Green Earth insect kit made by Fascinations┬«, has been designed to provide you with everything you need to create a successful habitat for the development of butterflies. A large net is supplied for viewing your habitat from all angles, with an easy access top. A magnifying glass is included for close up observations, a pipette for feeding the insects, and padded tip tweezers for moving the insects. Follow the insect life cycle with an instruction book (written in English, Spanish and French) leading you through four easy steps for maintaining a thriving habitat. Once the caterpillars have reached maturity and become butterflies, they can be released into nature.

Important note: Live caterpillars must be purchased separately, either by mail or online (approximately $9.95 to $17.95 extra depending on your shipping method). Order information is included with your package.

    Four Easy Steps
Once you have purchased your Butterfly Kit, raising your own live butterflies takes only four easy steps. First, purchase your caterpillars with the enclosed order information. Once you have received the caterpillars, the second step is to place them in a stable environment and watch them eat, grow, shed, make silky threads, and pupate. The third step is to take the pupates and place them inside the large net habitat until they have emerged as butterflies. The fourth and final step is to feed the butterflies, observe them, and set them free.

The product should clearly state that the actual larvae are not included and actually are an added expense. I would not buy again.

My kindergarten kids love 'raising' painted ladies and monarchs in this great (easy to store) environment.
It's especially great because, unlike many, you don't have to hang it up, and it's big enough for quite a few lepidoptera. Thanks for your great service and product. Kim

This was such a great experience for my 4 year old son! He got such great joy out of watching them grow and change and finally be released (exept for one poor little guy who can't fly. we're keeping him :)
