  • This amazing package includes everything you need to create a home security system that will seamlessly integrate with an Insteon automation system.

The ELK M1 Gold system features a rock-solid security foundation with powerful automation functionality. Choose from a wide variety of Elk security system accessories to create 16 zones (expandable to 208). This Elk panel even has the capacity to handle up to 144 wireless zones, just add an M1 Cable to NX Wireless harness, ELK Wireless Receiver / Input Expander. The RP software can be downloaded for FREE from the Elk website.

The Elk panel works with the included ISY-994i Controller, which is one of the most advanced Insteon-compatible controllers on the market, supporting up to 256 devices and scenes and a maximum of 300 programs. You can set up timer events and custom event triggers, as well as monitor and control all the Insteon-compatible devices in your home from any web-browser anywhere in the world. Also included is an Insteon Dual-Band PLM Serial Interface which features built-in dual-band technology that sends and receives Insteon signals via powerline and radio frequency (RF), so it doubles as an Access Point. This makes it ideal for new Insteon installs if you have or plan to use an RF-only Insteon-compatible devices like a remote, thermostat, motion sensor or contact sensor. Make your keypad truly flush mounted with the Flush-Mount Kit for M1 Keypad.

The voice announcement feature provides clear alerts and announcements, providing detailed information on alarms, zone descriptions, and status of areas. With a 500-plus-word/phrase vocabulary, you can link up to six words and phrases per announcements, and with an additional 10 custom-recordable words/phrases, you'll find this communications system to be extremely user-friendly. While the M1 Gold is expandable to support up to 16 LCD keypads, the system's included flush-mount keypad features a backlit, large-character LCD of 16 x 2 lines, which displays the system's diagnostics and settings. Between its menu navigation keys and its six programmable function keys, programming the display of time, date and temperature is made easy. On each keypad, one zone input and one output are programmable. Additional keypads and blue-backlit keypads are available to be purchased separately. And if you want the keypads to be truly flush-mounted in your walls, you will need the Flush Mount Kit. As supplied in the kit, the keypad sticks out of your wall about 1/2". A slim-line keypad is also available for use in spaces where you won't need the full functionality of the LCD keypad.

Add up to twelve sets of 16 hardwired zones to your M1 Gold with the M1 16 Zone Input Expander. Looking to add wireless receivers? Use the M1 Cable to NX Wireless. Additional units that can be purchased separately include the M1 Databus Hub and the M1 Relay Board.

Too Many potential failure points Review by DonB
    Too Many potential failure points

The ELK M1 Gold includes a Battery for backup. However the ISY-994i and the PLM require power to communicate. So both items require to plugged into a Battery Backup. The communications between the ELK M1 and the ISY-994i is via network connections. So then you have to have at least part of your network on battery backup.

They recommend not plugging the PLM into a power strip with a surge protector.

We were not able to connect to the PLM and ISY-994i with 2 battery powered wireless Insteon sensors. I suspect that the PLM was faulty. We decided to return the kit and all Insteon sensors because of the potential failure points. I am sure that we could have resolved the issue with the PLM and wireless Insteon devices, but we did not like the requirement for the multiple communication points. Difficulty reaching Customer service also contributed to our giving up on this product. Now we will find out how true the 30-day no hassle return policy is. There is no option to just request the return online. I have to contact Customer Service which is not responsive.

The ELK M1 seemed solid and flexible which is why I am giving this kit 2 stars.

Great system. The ELK M1 Gold is very easy to set up. If you are a DIY'er, you need to do a LOT of reading/research. The forums are great, but it assumes that you understand all of the basics. It took me about a couple of months to get all the M1 wired and tested and ths ISY up and running with all of my Insteon devices registered. I was starting from scratch, although I had experience setting up an X10 network in another house, and I didn't work on it full time. I read everything I could on each area I was working on, and spent a lot of time labeling and documenting everything I did. The bulk of the ELK M1 time was setting up the M1XEP; setting up the DDNS, setting up a NON SECURE SMTP email account and getting it to work, getting the time server working all took research, trial/error and time. I then tested the system for a week before calling a security monitoring service. Then I tackled the Insteon/ISY technology. There are 2 distinct pieces of software you will need to program your ELK1 and your ISY. They both are free and totally different interfaces and behavior and require a learning curve. I have not linked my Insteon devices to my Elk yet, but that is coming. Now that I understand it, it should be straight forward. It was a good learning experience, but this is not a weekend project at least not for me. I did purchase the eKeypad app 99.00 from the Apple app store. It is expensive, but works very well. It will probably be my most used interface, so I wanted to make sure it was solid. The ELK and ISY have a lot of great featuresand possibilities. Now that it is working, I am excited to take to the next step.

Great system, however...this is NOT a DIY system unless you are an advanced DIY'er. It's a robust alarm system and I love that it can be managed over the network. But you will be doing some programming to get every wireless point and PIR singing together.

Instructions are at the installer level and you should have some electrical experience reading a schematic to understand what you're up against.

    In the end....great system

I've had Insteon gear for a while, and an old PLM that I used to use to control the ~10 devices in the house. Recently decided to upgrade and get a home security system that I can control. I've never installed a security system so consider me a beginner.

With that in mind I have been able to get all of the components in this kit installed and operational in short order. It does help if you have pre-wired security sensors in place thought, which was the case for me.

The ISY took a little bit to get used to interface wise. I'm still learning a few things here and there. But again, i've been able to get 99% of the functionality I want out of this kit. I'm pleased for the most part.

I do want to reiterate the comment listed previously. The ISY that comes in the kit does *not* natively work with the ELK M1G without the additional purchase of a software license or module that runs $99. It was easy to buy and install... Just be aware of that extra cost.

The Elk M1G is a very capable security panel, though it does feel somewhat dated. For example, the XEP ethernet module supports sending email notifications but only to "non-secure" SMTP servers. Try to find a non-secure SMTP server in 2013. Not easy. Not as much experience yet with the ISY-994i. The ISY comes highly recommended, but I am a little disappointed on its reliance on Java in my browser which I traditionally have disabled and had to enable to configure this one product. As others have pointed out, this kit, which is aimed at being a combination M1/ISY kit, lacks the ISY module to integrate the ISY with the M1. It's another hundred bucks. Smarthome should really include that as part of the kit.

Was not quite sure where to give the stars since most of the problem was with smarthome. The system DOES require software to program as it would be a waste of time to try to do it through the keypad. the software (free) does NOT come with the unit is NOT supplied by smarthome and takes 2 days to get registered by elk just to download it. After some yelling.. smarthome did come through and let me use their account to download it. The manual does miss some key points as the install is not for beginners. Overall pretty pleased with the product. I may even buy another.
I have not implemented all the features yet but still working on it!
The web interface is weak which is why the isy994 was included. Too bad smart home does not sell wired sensors and a few included in the package. all in all expect to spend another K to deck it all out!

Awesome product so far! ISY is really flexible and has options for even more control. Unfortunately I dont have the ELK setup yet, but will report back when I do. Overall the system is exactly what I was looking for to interface and monitor my house! I'll report back when fully setup.

NOTE: The ISY does not come with the ELK module - you have to spend another $99 to get that integration. I know this seems odd, but it is true - you get some limited functionality with the kit, but not true integration. Maybe Smarthome will fix this in the future...
