The Insteon Portable USB Adapter is a home control interface that allows hardware-based automation systems to control Insteon-compatible lights, appliances, heating/air conditioning systems and alarm systems directly via the Insteon network. The interface requires 3rd party Insteon software in order to function. This includes Indigo, HCA or Homeseer. Check with third party software developer for support readiness.
The single-band interface sends and receives radio frequency (RF) Insteon signals. If you are trying to control power line only devices you must have at least one Access Point or dual-band Insteon product for communication. For best Insteon network performance, be sure you have properly installed at least two dual-band Insteon products
Since this is a RF only device, for always on applications, we highly recommend the plug-in dual-band version for superior performance and reliability.
Important Notes: This interface does not support program downloads and therefore the computer/software must remain on to execute timers and triggered events.
The USB Insteon PowerLinc Modem is a USB-based home automation interface that allows PC- and hardware-based automation controllers to control Insteon-compatible lights, appliances, heating/air conditioning systems and alarm systems directly via the Insteon network. The dual-band interface sends and receives both powerline and radio frequency (RF) Insteon signals, so it doubles as an Access Point. This makes it ideal for new Insteon installations if you have or plane to use an RF-only Insteon-compatible remote, thermostat, motion sensor and contact sensor. The RF signal can bypass electrical noise or attenuation near the PC and it pulls many of the "distant" Insteon devices one hop closer, which can expand the size of potential installations into even larger homes and commercial buildings.
If using with HouseLinc
If you intend on using this with HouseLinc software please note the following:
- HouseLinc software has been discontinued and is no longer supported
- To use this PLM with HouseLinc you must first download and update the HouseLinc Definitions file.
- No technical support provided for HouseLinc – we recommend reaching out to the Smarthome Forum community.
Ideal for Developer Use
Please note that developing application and controls for the PLM is not for the casual home automation enthusiast. Due to the nature of this product, Smarthome's technical support staff cannot offer programming support for developers. We cannot assist in the troubleshooting or development of applications and/or code.

- Works with OpenHAB2 Review by Greg

Works with OpenHAB2

Rating I bought this after having too many issues with the 2413U going offline after every power bump at my house while I'm away, rendering the complete Insteon setup DEAD until I got back home to reset the PLM. I'm just hoping this will be more reliable through power bumps. I had to use the free Insteon Terminal software to link it up to an Insteon Range Extender before adding it to OpenHAB. Every device thereafter will also need to be linked to this dongle before adding to OpenHAB using Insteon Terminal or HouseLinc (also free). I can also confirm that contrary to another review, HousLinc DOES see this device. It helps if you load HouseLinc first, then insert the dongle and scan using HouseLinc.

Rating I have been thru 3 different PLC/PLMs before the 2448A7 and had significant problems with all of them losing data when various motors in the house turned off (inductive spike put on power lines). The 2448A7, being isolated from the power mains, means that it is immune to noise spikes (and yes I had the other PLMs plugged into a spike protector strip along with an Access Point, but it didn't help).
My 2448A7 has run for several years now with absolutely no power line noise issues disrupting it's operation. :-)Posted on 9/23/2014

Rating Works flawlessly with HouseLinc 2. Surprisingly good range, Computer is in a different room than closest access point.

Rating Good unit. Easy to setup and use. I would have given it five stars, but they didn't stress that it can't be used to initiate X-10 signals even if you have several access points and dual band devices.

Rating The range is horrible. I have one dual band lamp linc within 10 feet and I consistently have connection problems. There are two more devices another lamplinc and an insteon bulb within another 15 feet and they don't help. I don't know how everyone else gets this working, but I think I'm going to ditch this thing in favor of one of the wall plug versions.
Too bad too. It seemed like such a better solution than having this big thing plugged in someplace. If they can get the range to work they'll have a winner.Posted on 3/29/2013

Rating Doesn't work with Houselinc software as described, as it is not detected as a interface. Gold support was no help, they just said it shroud work and to uninstall and re-install. Homeseer detects the device but says firmware is out of date and doesn't work. Very disappointing that does not work with Houselinc since that is the first line of the overview! Now I have to go through the hassle of returning it.
Very happy with all my other INSTEON devices, but am upset that they are selling this, stating that it will work with Houselinc but it does not.Posted on 1/16/2013

Rating Man I hate I got rid of mines. Im buying another one. For the one that mentioned short range, use multiple AP's. Remember, all you need is one to get started in the home and as you had more, you add range. Worked perfect for me. Watch for my order in the next few days insteon. Good product.

Rating It was the best-priced PC interface for Insteon at the time, and I also like the fact it has no wires to the AC power line, so one less path between my 24x6 PC and lightning stroke power surges. The RF range was less than I expected. It only gave about 90% reliability when its nearest access point was a dual-band in-wall dimmer switch about 25ft away. I added a dual-band plug-in adapter about 5ft away and no problems since.

Rating The range isn't what I'd like, but it works well once it's close enough.
