An amazing entry level and user friendly home automation hub. Review by Philip
An amazing entry level and user friendly home automation hub.

I set my hub 2245-222 up this month, october 2016. It was easy, I just followed the onscreen prompts. I am using a windows phone 10 app and windows 10 app. The only problem I acountered was the curent time on the hub. It was incorrect even with the correct location. I reached out to insteon and they were able to fix this for me remotly. It is only fixable by the user with the IOS app and android app. However, since this is an issue that I will not have to every fix again I still give 5 stars. The hub is very entry level. It is made to be user friendly that just about anyone can setup. I think that Insteon should offer a premium version that is much more customizable. This would be great for when a user becomes more advanced and wishes for a more premium home setup.

Very Good Review by Kevin C.
    Very Good

Having been a long time X-10 user I have recently begun switching over to Insteon. So far, from a simplicity and functional perspective I've found the Insteon Hub to be very good. Judging from some of the harshly negative reviews on here, I expected the worst, but I've had none of the issues previously reported - I can only guess that the prior reviews were based on experiences with earlier versions of the Insteon App or Hub firmware.

Setup was extremely simple and quite quick. After a very short time I was able to have all the lights in my living room and several scenes setup. A minor complaint here is that documentation is sparse/not immediately available, but a quick web search on the couple of questions that I had got me the documentation and answers I needed.

My primary complaint, and reason for four stars instead of five, is that the programming support in the Hub is quite rudimentary and limited vs. what I am used to with the X-10 ActiveHome software and USB Transceiver. From what I have been able to tell (so far) there is no support for conditional logic, macros that perform various actions with delays in between, etc. I presume that most people can probably live without this functionality, but in my case it caused me angst because I have a fairly complex X-10 macro that automates some vertical blinds. The good news for me, however, was that the Hub can be used to trigger X-10 codes, so I was able to keep my X-10 blind macro cached to my X-10 transceiver, and use the Insteon hub to trigger it.

I have yet to do much with timers, and I understand that there are some additional limitations here compared with what I'm used to, but I don't think they would be show stoppers for most people.

I suppose time will tell if the Hub lives up to my initial four-star review, but so far, given the simplicity and how well things are working (especially compared to other reviews I've seen here) I felt compelled to post. If you want a simple to use, fairly versatile Insteon controller that is available for a great price (got mine for $39.99) then this seems to be a great option.

No luck with the Echo. Review by Larry
    No luck with the Echo.

I've had none of the problems mentioned in the other reviews, but I can't get it to work with my Amazon Echo. The Echo will link to the hub but won't discover my devices.

Smarthome response: Sorry to hear that devices were not found during discovery. Please refer to this article as it may help <a href="">No Insteon Devices found when Adding Insteon Hub to Amazon Echo</a>

This fixed a number of issues with my Insteon System Review by Geoffrey
This fixed a number of issues with my Insteon System

I was having issues with my hub talking to my phone when I was not connected via my local wifi. SmartHome sent me an offer to upgrade my hub to this model for a reduced cost and since then my system has been much more reliable.

Could be better Review by Tom
    Could be better

I updated to this hub 2245-222 from the old hub 2242-222 so I could control everything from Amazon echo ,but this new hubs range will not reach any of my devices at the far end of the house.which the old hub had no problem now have to spend more money on range extenders even though all my devices are dual band.

The easy programming that I had been searching for Review by Jason
The easy programming that I had been searching for

I had worked with X10 and a couple different computer based lighting control programs for years. There is no comparison to how easy it now it to control and program your lighting at home via your phone with the new Hub. Very intuitive and great that other family members can login and turn their devices into controllers at well. I hope that this platform continues to be enhanced and that additional functionality and the ability to do a few more complex logics statements within Scenes becomes available.

Upgraded to this Hub from the previous Hub for Echo support Review by Jim
Upgraded to this Hub from the previous Hub for Echo support

I love the fact this hub works with the Amazon Echo!!! However, the software bugs that were resolved with the previous Insteon Hub (2242-222) are back on this one (probably a copy/paste from the original Insteon Hub software). The days of the week are off by one get a Monday thru Friday timer to work you have to set it to Sunday thru Thursday in the android app. Also the daylight savings time schedule is incorrect, probably set to the old schedule.

The ability of the Amazon Echo to detect and to verbally report a change in the state of an open/close sensor like the Garage Door controller and the hidden door sensors...i.e. say "Garage Door Open" or "Front Door Closed."

My biggest complaint with both Insteon Hub software/controller apps is the lack of the ability to offset a schedule for sunrise/sunset times by +/- 5, 10, 15, 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes and the +/- 30 minute randomization "security" feature that was available with my old ActiveHome Pro X-10 controller. If the offset method for the sunrise and sunset times is implemented, then more of my controllers could utilize the Sunrise/Sunset times with different offsets without causing the same time conflict that occurs now.

If those fixes are implemented, this would no doubt be a 5 star product in my opinion.

Amazon Echo support makes it worth it Review by jtmoderate876
Amazon Echo support makes it worth it

I've had this thing for almost a year and have been disappointed with the lack of flexible programmability (no conditions like If the kids bathroom light is on for 2 hours turn it off), inability to configure advanced switch features such as "don't blink switch LED with Insteon traffic), LED brightness, default dimmer level, etc.

Last week (9/2015) I got an email saying it now supports Amazon Echo.
I was able to tie it to Echo in a minute (just entered Insteon user/pw in Echo app) and was immediately able to say "Alexa, turn on Kitchen Island Light", Alexa, turn of Powder Room Light", etc.

The Echo support makes this thing so much more useful.
I have been looking at alternatives to Insteon because:
#1 - I've not been happy with the controller options (I only bought this hub last year so I could decommission my PC running HouseLink - but the lack of programming features has been a source of constant disappointment)
#2 - no good, high end thermostat support. My Insteon Venstar had too much leakage current for my new heat/air system. Nest didn't support multi-stage, multi-zone, and there are just no good insteon options. I bought Ecobee. It's great but doesn't support insteon or this hub
#3 - no good lock options
#4 - no chamberlain garage door support
#5 - no IFTTT (if this then that)

Anyway, This new Amazon Echo support gives me hope that perhaps my SmartHome investment may still have a future.
