Severely Flawed Design Review by Douglas
    Severely Flawed Design

First let me say that I have been a big Insteon and SmartHome fan for more than 12 years and have installed numerous Insteon in 3 of my homes and a dozen or so homes of friends. But now I discovered a VERY SERIOUS FLAW in the design - without an internet connection everything stops working!

As a Florida resident impacted by Hurricane Irma I lost my internet connection, but still have power but the flawed design of the hub stops everything from working. None of my security devices, external lighting or preset schedules work! So, when I need it the most, nothing work. I can understand that without an internet connection I can't control things remotely, However, when my Home Network (LAN) is functioning and my iPhone is connected to my home network why can't I control the devices and scenes setup on my hub? It makes no sense..

The old hub used to work that way and I would have never upgraded to the new one had I know of this limitation. It would be a simple software issue to correct this flaw, but without that fix I would not recommend Insteon for anyone.

If they do fix that and add the capability of controlling and scene defined in an Insteon hub from another Insteon device (i.e. making a scene in the hub a responder) it would really open doors and greatly simplify home control setup.

Works great - looks terrible! Review by Clearmountain
    Works great - looks terrible!

I like this product. Great for the price, easy to set up and it works quite well, as advertised. The IOS app, although well laid out and easy to access, looks miserable! How about some color other than light blue? And the tiny, white font on a LIGHT blue background is practically impossible to read on my iPhone. Please hire a good GUI graphics person and put some thought into it, then run it by someone over 60.

Works till it doesn't, then it's work for you Review by Michael
Works till it doesn't, then it's work for you

Bought this to replace the earlier version. Here's a tip for "replacers"

    It's unbelievably stupid.

Don't even try to follow the instructions in the box. Wait till you are in a patient frame of mind and then call tech support. You'll need to turn off the old account and set up a new one. Oh, and it won't have your devices. The guy on the other end of the line was kind enough to send me a device list.

THEN, wait half an hour or so for someone to get your email terminating the account. That's where I am now. Later this evening, I expect to be able to connect to the hub to complete installation.

Sorry guys, this is incredibly poorly thought through, and doubly so since the need is created by your poor design of rev 1 in the first place.

very poor reliability, dead after 2.5 years Review by Dean
very poor reliability, dead after 2.5 years

I like many owners/reviewers have had their INSTEON hub completely fail in a short period of time. Unfortunately mine failed after the 2 year warranty so I need to either purchase a new hub or decide to finally switch to one of the more modern and reliable systems. I see that there was an acknowledgment about a fault in some of the earlier models. I would have hoped the warranty would have been extended to cover the faulty units like other companies have done. This does help me make my decision.

Smarthome reply: We have identified an issue that effects Insteon Hub (2245-222 - revisions prior to 2.3) where in rare circumstances a component may fail if exposed to prolonged and excessive heat. In these failures the Hub will cease to function. To prevent such an issue from occurring we introduced a hardware change that began shipping in December 2016 (Rev 2.3).

Insteon Hub Central Controller #2245-222 Review by Mike
    Insteon Hub Central Controller #2245-222

A few months ago I purchased the latest Insteon Hub #2245-222 version to replace my 2 year old one. i was and am disappointed that a backup of my original hub's programming was not available on the cloud! I had to reprogram every device, scene, room, and favorites in the new hub. This is NUTS!

I guess I am lucky that my hubs have never failed. I depend on my hub to control 21 devices around my home. PLEASE establish a backup for our hub programming.

Don't buy this! Review by Frank
    Don't buy this!

I used Houselinc software for years, and while it's a little strange at times It got the job done. I bought the Hub because it was the latest and greatest and offered control without leaving my computer running. Bottom line is that it doesn't work. I have very simple scenes, sunset, sunrise, and midnight. First off, the App for Windows 10 is useless. Can't do anything with it. Next programming scenes in the Iphone app is a nightmare, after carefully adding 20 insteon switches to a scene it then says "gathering information" for a minimum of 15 minutes and sometimes longer. Is this really reasonable with a supposedly smarthouse system? Then it asks me to walk around my house, tap the set button and press OK to continue for each switch. Then it asks me the press and hold the set button for each switch while pressing OK on the phone. Has anyone actually tried to do this by themselves? It literally takes over an hour to program a scene and worst of all this happens EACH TIME I MAKE A CHANGE TO A SCENE. My iPhone battery actually used about 30% of the battery one day trying to program a scene. And now that I have finally programmed all my scenes, they literally don't work. Somehow my sunset scene comes on at 4 in the afternoon every day. I'm not really sure how I could have f****ed this up as I simply selected "turn on at sunset", and it has the correct time zone in the system. And folks, I could go on but I'm getting bored and angry as I type so I will just say JUNK. I'm going to pull my old modem out of the junk bin and go back to houselinc. So frustrating.

Replacing the hub aka unpleasant surprise Review by Davor
Replacing the hub aka unpleasant surprise

Well, my old hub died and I got a new one and was up for an unpleasant surprise. Not that you are warned here the replacement hub cannot use your existing account and setup. In other words, you must again add all devices, recreate scenes, etc. I just cannot believe that Smarthome would not give an option to replace MAC address, hub ID, or whatever it's using to identify the hub, so that one can use existing setup that most of us spent hours and hours creating. THE POINT OF HAVING ACCOUNT IN CLOUD IS EXACTLY TO BE ABLE TO USE IT EVENTHOUGH SOMEONE"S HARDWARE WENT KAPUT. Imagine that you change your phone and cannot access your photos, music, etc. in the cloud? What would you do? Dump the provider, right? I've been using SMarthome company for years and have spent thousands and would not expect something like this.

Apparently iOS app has a capability of adding the second hub, but Android does not. So SMarthome thinks that they can ignore 80% of phone users, I guess? Are you an Apple subsidiary? Outrageous.

    Unhappy long-time customer

could be the worst electronic device made

one would have to try hard to make a product less intuitive...!!! truly a plug and pray device !! rather than plug and play...if they still have support by phone ..i will try to find a couple or three hours to have support stumble thru the setup...

one step forward, one step back -- obsolescence by design, thank you very much Review by Hue
one step forward, one step back -- obsolescence by design, thank you very much

Bought for control via Echo -- only to loose X10 control. So much for the multi-protocol support that led me to purchase insteon in the first place. What goes away next?

Not the best by a long shot Review by Jim
Not the best by a long shot

I have ISY and Indigo, by comparison, the Insteon Hub is very weak. You can schedule events and that is about it. The ISY and Indigo solutions provide a much higher degree of customization and programming, with the ISY having greater depth into the capabilities of most devices and monitoring status better, while Indigo is much easier to program and more user friendly. The Insteon Hub is the cheapest of the three solutions, so it might be the solution for many users. If you have any level of "geek" in you, the Insteon Hub is a toy.
