  • The Z-Wave Controlled Air Vent from Econet EV100-6X12WH allows automatic and intelligent control of room venting by regulating temperatures and even shutting off airflow to unoccupied rooms when combined with a Z-Wave occupancy sensor. The Z-Wave vents are retrofit replacements for standard home forced air vents and are compatible with most Z-Wave controllers and control software for efficient energy management and savings. Once enrolled into your existing Z-Wave network these smart vents are controllable with a smartphone, tablet, or computer from anywhere Internet access is available. The vent can be programmed to open or shut automatically based on occupancy, vacancy, schedules, or whole-house scenes; and includes push-buttons for manual operation as well.

When the Z-Wave vents are properly configured, energy expenditure can be reduced by 20% or more. Some configuration options include the combination of Z-Wave occupancy sensors, motion sensors, activity sensors, and temperature sensors. An example of an energy saving configuration limits forced airflow in unoccupied rooms on a schedule. The bedroom airflow automatically shuts off when the room is empty during the day and the living area of home would have full airflow. The reverse vent control schedule can be applied overnight when the bed room is occupied and the living room is unoccupied. The Z-Wave Air Vent is powered by two AAA batteries, sold separately.

Not ready for prime time Review by HA guy
    Not ready for prime time

I got one of these to try out. It was for a shared wall stack to control heat and cooling into each room on the shared stack.

First off the device works fine as far as connecting to my Veralite. No problems there. The vents open and close just fine.

Now on to the problem. Most HVAC systems are designed to meet the needs of the rooms they serve. A 6x12 opening off a wall stack is meant to deliver enough heat/cool to keep the room comfortable. It was designed to have a certain type of grill to distribute the air and have enough sq ft opening to meet the needs of the room.

This grill cuts down on the opening from a normal 55 sq/in of opening to 42.5 sq/in. That is a 25% reduction of air flow. On top of that the veins are rather thick which reduces air flow. The "U" shape will cause back pressure and reduce flow even more and I have calculated that this vent will reduce total air flow over 50%.

If the room in which this is going into can stand a 50% reduction in air flow then it should work just fine. The room I put it in cannot handle that kind of reduction in air flow and during the very hot weather we just had, I had to remove the vent completely to get the room cooled down to where it was comfortable. The only fixed vent I had in there worked just fine. But bing that it was a shared stack the other room was too cold. My goal was to get them to the same temperature.

I have gone to using a Suncourt 8 inch inline electronic damper on the other vent into the room to make it work for me.

Would I recommend this vent to anyone? Not really. It is too expensive and cuts down on the air flow way to much. That is a deal buster for me.

I've had one of these installed in my spare bedroom for several months, still going strong. I'm using a Vera Lite and it's working flawlessly. I'm not sure about other controller hubs but I have used other devices with inControl and found it quite buggy and awkward. Anyway, the vent came in real handy as my spare bedroom vent is under the bed and isn't used a lot but the room gets very hot in the summer.

I have several Ecovents used for day time/night time shut off of unused rooms and they work very well. The removable controller makes installing and pairing easy and the vent seems to be robust and still working well after 6 months.

EcoNet has a no charge replacement or refund policy. I have several of the EV100 vents installed. They paired easily and are all working perfectly.

This vents are a total fail. I don't even know where to start. I bought 2 -- I assumed that at least one software product would work with them. I tried inControl, HomeSeer, no dice. They open, close then open -- they are completely none consistent with what they do. I tried basic level commands to get them to go to particular state, they seem to have a mind of their own. I tried setting a start level, tried having it honor the start level -- no dice. Very poor firmware execution. I don't post reviews. I just felt that this had to be said. EcoNet needs to fix these, or smarthome should pull them from their site.

Don't know why this got a 2* review. This product is awesome to give you control over an older forced air HVAC system that doesn't have multiple zones or motorized dampers in the ceiling.

I bought 1 to test in my office. Took me 10 mins to install, works perfectly with my Indigo HA system and am about to buy 9 more to cover the rest of the house.

    This is a great product

Doesn't close fully. Will close and them pop open about 30%. Sometimes when it opens, it will open, then immediately close, then immediately reopen.
