4 unitsEcobee 3 Thermostat Review by FROMNY
    4 unitsEcobee 3 Thermostat

I purchased four of these thermostats to replace old mercury type units in my 5600 sq foot home. The thermostats work well as a group, connected by WiFi. However the software is a bit buggy. Sometimes it works as described other times it does not. For instance the vacation mode should change the set-points to a vacation-mode specified temperature. The set-points will not change to vacation-mode if the set-points were previously changed manually. This problem defeats the benefit of the vacation mode because it will not change the manually configured set-points and leave the unit calling for heat or cool when nobody is home.

Other issues if have are; some settings have too much delay to get going. for instance at times (it was erratic) I changed the set-point to call for heat. This did not work form a long period maybe half hour, like the unit was stuck. This condition is unacceptable, when heat is required (or cooling) the unit should call for that within a short period, few seconds no more than a minute.

Instruction manual fails to indicate some conditions. for instance; When accessing the unit through the Web, at times the label of the unit (above the thermostat temperature tile) was flashing other times that same area the tile displayed "off" but there is no reference to this conditions in the manual. Customer support gave me wrong information. still don't know what it means.

Other times the temperature went three degrees below the set-point before calling for heat. this is also not acceptable.

I think the idea and the design is great, but these bugs need to be fixed to make it great unit. Because of the unpredictability of the performance i give the unit 3 stars. Had these issues not been there it would be a five-star thermostat.

    Loving it! Review by akananook
    Loving it!

Purchased with two additional sensors. Unit was easy to install on my gas furnace/central air with whole house humidifier. Love the flexibility in how it can be configured and programmed to sense motion and react to tempuratures in rooms that previously were difficult to get to the desired temp when they were occupied. I have the newer model with Apple HomeKit and being able to tell Siri to interact with the thermostat is great. The remote app works great, and the statistics it provides and reports from the website are awesome. Love it!

    Great Thermostat Review by JP
    Great Thermostat

One month ago, I replaced 2 Nest thermostats with 2 Ecobee3 thermostats along a total of 4 remote sensors. I have a 6 year old, 2,700 square foot ranch style home located in the Phoenix Metro with two heat pumps. I have to say that I am extremely pleased with these thermostats as they completely outperform any thermostats we have had in the house including 2 different sets of Honeywell thermostats.

With the extra sensors, the each main thermostat is taking an average of the temperatures of the sensors and thermostat and then adjusting the temperature accordingly. Yes, it is not a true zone system but without spending a couple of thousand of dollars to retrofit my house with a true zone system, it has really paid off. My house has never been this comfortable in the 6 years we have lived in it and my wife is thrilled as we don't have hot spots in house.

As for energy savings, it is to early to say what that may be. Another plus for these thermostats is they do not have the wide temperature spread that the Nest is famous for. They were easy to install and to program. The Ecobee application is easy to use and provides a wealth of information in regards to the status of the thermostats, the sensors but most importantly, the status of the temperature of the house.

    stay away Review by Devesh
    stay away

I bought 2 of these to replace the Honeywell thermostats in my home in both zones.

ever since i installed them, there is over a 5 degree temp swing in one of the zones and my house is either too hot or too cold. ecobee support does not want to replace the thermostats and keeps blaming my house (its brand new) and if i replace the unit with my old Honeywell or a Trane Z-Wave thermostat, there is no issue

Also this unit is causing the fan in the unit to make lound noises in both zones

Smarthome will not take the units back without a 25% restocking fee as its been over a month troubleshooting with ecobee

I'm stuck with it for now and they will be removed as soon when my electrician stops by over the weekend.

Great so far Review by Jason
    Great so far

Nice thermostat. Very easy to install and has been working great. I installed the PEK myself. I have experience with adding outlets, standard home projects, etc., so I wasn't concerned about adding the PEK. Instructions are very straightforward - just match the wire / terminal combination in the air handler. The Android app works great. I've accessed it at least a dozen times in the 3 days since installing and have experienced no issues with connectivity. I decided to accept the default configuration as it relates to the sensors and Home / Away modes to see if it satisfies my needs. So far it's been fine. I set a temp for the heat to come on and a temp for the air conditioning to come on. The thermostat it self if located in the master bedroom and I put the included sensor in one of the bedrooms where the temperature tends to fluctuate more than other rooms. I'll give it a few days to see how well it normalizes or averages the temp in both locations, but if nothing it should assist me in adjusting the vents. As usual, Smarthome ordering and delivery process was painless.

Not a zoning system and some of the wiring could be wrong Review by rj
Not a zoning system and some of the wiring could be wrong

The description and manuals might lead some one to believe this system can individually adjust an occupied room's temperature like a zoning system. However it just raises or lowers the whole house to achieve the desired occupied room temperature, no zoning dampers or valves. Plus it would not be an appropriate replacement for many existing zoning thermostats that can control multiple zones from one thermostat. Finally, the wiring examples are simplistic and, in some cases like heat pumps, could be incorrect. For example, many heat pumps requires the W heat line from the thermostat to go only to the outside unit to allow the outside unit to control the electric strips in the indoor unit. At the very least, take good notes and pictures of the existing wiring so that you can restore it if necessary.
