  • FireWire cables allows you to send data between your high-bandwidth digital devices. Faster and more efficient than USB, FireWire cables can transfer information between FireWire 800 devices at speeds up to 800Mbps. You will be able to move large volumes of data quickly, efficiently, and reliably. The plug-and-play technology makes using FireWire just as simple to use as USB cables. Just connect the cables and your operating system will automatically auto-detect and ask for a driver disc. You will be able to connect all your high-end digital audio and video, home networking, and computer devices to one another. Also known as i.Link or IEEE 1394, this cable can transfer information between devices at a maximum distance of 100 meters. FireWire cables also allow for peer-to-peer connections, so you can connect your digital devices directly to one another - no need for a computer for the devices to communicate.     Choosing a FireWire Cable
    There are three kinds of FireWire connectors: 4-pin, 6-pin, and 9-pin. Cables may have the same or different types of connector at each end. The types of connectors you will require depend on your application and whether your devices are equipped with FireWire 400 or FireWire 800 technology.

    No power is carried between 4-pin connectors, only data. 4-pin connectors are often found on peripherals with built-in power supplies, such as laptop computers. You can recognize a 4-pin connector by its rectangular shape with a small notch or indentation on the bottom edge. 4-pin connectors are considered FireWire 400 connectors and can transfer files at speeds of up to 400Mbps, at a distance of up to 15 feet.

    Unlike 4-pin connectors, the 6-pin connector is capable of transferring DC power as well as data between devices. Devices that can provide power, such as desktop computers are often equipped with 6-pin connectors. Contacts are flattened to withstand constant plugging and unplugging of the cable. 6-pin connectors are rectangular in shape with beveled corners on one end. 6-pin connectors are also considered FireWire 400 connectors and can transfer files at speeds of up to 400Mbps, at a distance of up to 15 feet.

    As part of the FireWire 800 generation, 9-pin connectors can transfer both information and power across cable lengths of up to 100 meters at speeds of up to 800Mbps. However, when adapted to FireWire 400 connectors, the maximum transfer rate will be 400Mbps. In addition to the power and data-sharing capabilities, 9-pin connectors provide a grounded shield to protect the other wires from potential interference. 9-pin connectors are rectangular with four square corners.
