After about 6 months into my home automation journey, I bought the Roomba 690. At first, I thought the robot vacuum was significantly over-priced, but as I continued to use it, I realized it was worth every single penny I spent on it.
My initial thought was, "Why would I buy something over $300 when I have a $30 dirt devil and a broom to clean my floors?" If I really wanted to, I could take a trip to my local dollar tree, buy a broom, and have clean floors in an hour.
Pros & Cons
Now, when I make purchases over $300, I like to formulate a pros and cons list, regardless of how bad I want the product. When I first start writing out my pros and cons list, I scroll through the product benefits. For the purpose of this Roomba review, I am going to list some benefits that caught my eye.
-The Roomba grabs debris with two brushes
-It automatically detects dirt
-I can command Alexa to clean the house
-I am able to control it through a smartphone
Also, I despise sweeping. I will ALWAYS take dish duty over sweeping.
As I mentioned before, the only con on my list was the price. So I decided to bite the bullet and buy it. I also paid with Affirm, which is a payment plan that Smarthome offers and it allows me to pay off the Roomba in installments over time. This made the price more reasonable and made me more willing to try the product.
It arrived in a relatively large box and I immediately thought I had a lengthy setup ahead of me. However, the process was mindlessly simple. The whole installation took about 5 minutes and as soon as the app is downloaded on your smartphone, it's smooth sailing from there. All I really had to do was put the filter in and find a spot in the house where I wanted the home station to be. The home station is where it charges when it's finished cleaning.
I connected the mobile app with Alexa and set schedules to make sure I come home to a clean floor as soon as I walk in the door from work. In my opinion, this is one of the biggest benefits I get from this product.
How Do Roombas Work?
I could give you the bullet point list of exactly how a Roomba works, but for the sake of keeping this Roomba review short and sweet, I'll just hit the most important key points.
It is a robot vacuum that can detect dirt and is even able to focus on areas of high dirt traffic. It cleans both hardwood and carpet, however, if you have thicker carpet, you'll want to invest in the Roomba 890. Do you have a two story house? The Roomba can detect stairs and knows not to even attempt to go down them. It also knows when the cleaning cycle is over or when it is on low battery and returns itself to the charging dock.
You can set up schedules through the app to have it clean during certain times and you can command it to clean through a simple voice command to Alexa. If neither of these are appealing to you, all you have to do is press the button directly on the Roomba to get it started.
Did I Like It?
It wouldn't be a real Roomba review if I didn't give my own opinions and insight about the product, so here we go...
I love it.
I have a 3-year-old pug who sheds A LOT, and I walk to the beach and fish all the time, which leaves my floors covered in sand. The combination of sand and dog hair means I am excessively sweeping my floors, but the Roomba Robot Vaccum makes my life so much easier. All it takes is a simple, "Alexa, clean the house" command and the floors are squeaky clean in minutes. This is especially useful after cooking in the kitchen. I don't even have to think about setting schedules or pushing buttons, I just use my voice.
It is also much less disturbing than most vacuums. I can hold a conversation, watch TV or even listen for the doorbell, all while my floors are being vacuumed. This is a feature I didn't expect to really care about, but I really enjoy being able to go about my daily life while the vacuum is quietly running in the background.
Overall, I do recommend this product to anyone who is on the fence about buying a robot vacuum for their home. The simple setup, ease of use, and always coming home to clean floors make this product worth your dime. The price did hold me back from purchasing at first, but after having it, I wish I had bought it sooner. I would make this purchase over and over because it means never having to touch a broom or hand-vacuum ever again.
