Wemo Smart Switch On Wall Behind Chair

Wemo occupies a relatively narrow niche in the smart tech space, but that’s not a bad thing.

Owned by Belkin, Wemo's core product focus is lighting with the following line-up:

  • Light Switch
  • Light Switch 3-Way
  • Dimmer
  • Insight Smart Plug
  • Mini Smart Plug
  • Bridge

By devoting their attention to so few products, Wemo can pour all their energies into getting things dialed-in perfectly.

After experimenting with smart light bulbs, Wemo has moved back to a two-pronged attack to smart lighting. You can take full advantage of the smart plugs to add a shot of intelligence into appliances. The switches and smart dimmer switches allow you to go much further and automate lighting throughout your connected home.

Works with Wemo

Wemo is designed to work wonderfully either alone, or connected with other smart home ecosystems.

You can build in HomeKit devices and you can press either Google Assistant or Alexa into action. With HomeKit, of course, you’ll have Siri on call.

If you want to get even more ambitious with automation, create some custom applets using If This, Then That (IFTTT). The beauty of IFTTT is the ability you’ll have to build workarounds, making just about any other smart home equipment compatible with your Wemo devices.

Top 3 Products

It’s tough to choose the best Wemo products, but we’ve narrowed down our favorites to the following trio in no particular order.

1) Wemo Smart Dimmer Switch

If you’re looking to smarten up your lighting, smart light bulbs can be a good move. The problem is, the cost adds up quickly, so what can you do instead?

With smart switches and dimmer switches, you might have a slightly more invasive installation, but you’ll get the most bang for your buck.

Unlike much smart lighting, this hard-hitting dimmer switch doesn’t call for a third-party hub thanks to Wi-Fi connectivity.

Interoperability is exceptional. You’ll be able to use voice control with Alexa or Google Assistant. Wemo is also fully HomeKit compatible, too. Throw in IFTTT and you can automate and schedule your lighting with the utmost ease.

All dimmable bulbs, from incandescent and CFLs through to energy-efficient LEDs, make a neat fit. Wattage is capped at 400 watts for incandescent bulbs, 150 watts for CFLs and LEDs. While the regular Wemo smart switch is a great piece of kit, the added flexibility of fine-tuning brightness levels is a home run. You can get mood lighting the easy way with Wemo.

If you have experienced coming downstairs in the middle of the night to be suddenly and temporarily blinded with light, you’ll appreciate Night Mode. To prevent this, you can set your lights to come on at much lower levels overnight.

You can program your lighting or arrange for it to come on and off with sunrise and sunset, or automate your climate control all the way with this powerful dimmer.

As well as making your life much more convenient, this dimmer switch adds a valuable layer of convenience to your smart home, too. With Away Mode activated, your lights will be randomized in your absence. It will look like your home is occupied even if you’re on the other side of the world.

You’ll need a neutral wire, so if you have an older home where you don’t have this common wire, you’ll need to factor this into your budgeting.

If you’re looking for a straightforward introduction to whole-house smart lighting without needing a hub, Wemo’s dimmer makes perfect sense. This dimmer has compatibility and ease of use, and it also works well if you’re a savvier smart home practitioner.

2) Wemo Mini WiFi Smart Plug

Smart plugs are one of the most common entry points to home automation for their plug-and-play ease.

The key selling point of these intelligent outlets is the way you can upgrade old, non-connected appliances and devices and begin enjoying remote control.

Wemo’s Mini WiFi Smart Plugs address a number of pain points giving you maximum performance with minimum footprint. The way these outlets stack allows you to use a pair of plugs in a single outlet.

You’ll benefit from detailed energy reporting in-app. This will let you monitor any power-hungry appliances, so you can decide which you should use less in order to save money on your utility bills.

Another prime advantage with Wemo products is the WiFi connectivity allowing you to sidestep an additional hub. Despite this, you’ll still be able to use your digital assistant of choice from Alexa and Google Assistant to Siri. You can build out IFTTT recipes, too. Wemo plays nicely with devices from most major manufacturers, so it makes a neat choice whatever ecosystem you’re locked into at home.

From lamps and fans through to heaters and portable air conditioners, any small appliance can be plugged into this small but potent outlet. You can then control the old device remotely. Throw in a smart speaker and you can also control the fan using nothing but voice commands.

A huge attraction with smart plugs is their versatility. When you first think of home automation, it’s natural to bring bleeding-edge gadgets to mind. Once you get deeper into connecting up your home, it’s also nice to smarten up conventional appliances to make your life even easier.

Check out this smart plug sold separately or in 3-packs, and add an extra dimension to your automated home.

3) Wemo Smart Bridge (Works with Apple HomeKit)

While Wemo devices work without a home hub in place, if you’re looking to integrate Wemo gear into your HomeKit ecosystem, you will need a Smart Bridge. The great news is, this comes in at an almost unbelievably low price. So, what do you get for your modest investment?

Once you have this bridge in place, you’ll be able to control your Wemo devices using Apple Home app or Siri on your preferred iOS device. If you have a smartwatch, you’ll be able to take charge from your wrist.

The Home app makes it super-simple to group all your devices by room, streamlining control further.

Scheduling couldn’t be easier and you can also create your own custom scenes, enabling you to command multiple devices at once.

The Smart Bridge is a worthwhile purchase if you’re fully invested in the HomeKit ecosystem, but you also appreciate the many benefits of Wemo smart lighting. If you have the Insight Smart Plug or the regular Smart Light Switch, you’ll need this bridge and standalone HomeKit support will not be forthcoming.

For HomeKit users, this bridge is an inexpensive essential allowing you to bring Apple and Wemo together in harmony.

Best of The Rest

With the standard WiFi Light Switch, you’ll get the same all-round package as the dimmer provides except, of course, without the option of manipulating brightness levels.

This switch also now comes in a 3-way version. This allows you to replace 3-way switches often found in hallways where more than one switch controls the same light. This is a powerful addition to the Wemo range for anyone who wants a Wemo lighting solution rolled out throughout the whole home. As with the standard switch, you will need a neutral wire for installation.

The classic Wemo Insight Smart Plug is also still going strong. Not only can you bring old appliances to life with this outlet, but you’ll also benefit from energy reporting. This allows you to double down on your power consumption.
