If you are going to work with x10 this is the tester to get. I have used it for years. People think i am magical. not I just use the best tester made. I would still have one but some one stole it out of my truck.

It works as advertised but takes some interpretation to use correctly-not as user friendly as I expected

I have tried 3 of the signal testers and this I found to be the best and worth the money. It allows logging up to 190 signals and their voltages to track down intermittent problems. Use the 5 & 10 amp FilterLinc on any device in the home that causes signal absorption.

If you are having problems with your X-10 system this unit is ideal. It is worth the price. I had a problem with my system and this was the only way I could track it down (see below). If you are having problems with your system or even if it is not as reliable as you would like this is the unit to buy. You can then add noise filters to block noise but more impotantly reduce signal absorption. Couplers and boosters/amplifiers can also be added.

I tried the less expensive unit for about $100 but it was not as useful as it did not give signal and noise voltages. Another problem was that in the history mode it would not display signal strength if a BoosterLinc is installed.

The unit for $300 was suggested but it does not log a history of the strength of the signals.

I first installed an ApplianceLinc 2002STW3 2-Way for its quietness. The module would turn on without reason and fail to respond to an off command. In addition, devices began to fail throughout my house. I then installed a 2002SHL3 1-Way and had the same problems.

I purchased this 4814 Signal Tester and found that plugging in just 1 of these modules dropped the signal strength from about 2.5 volts to 0.5 volts or less. There was very little line noise measuring about 0.5 mV. The standand appliance modules work fine with no measurable loss of signal strength (I just wish they were more quiet).

I believe that there is a severe problem with these modules in absorbing X-10 signals.

Great device. Learned much about my X-10 environment and X-10 signals in general. Would be better if there was control over which command the Signal Dissect function examines. Such as the last history command being displayed (not recorded).
