The Venstar ColorTouch Series Thermostat is a multi-functional, simple-to-use, programmable touchscreen thermostat in which the user can customize their own backgrounds. This thermostat is compatible with most heating and air conditioning equipment and controls gas/electric or heat pump equipment, with up to 4 heating and 2 cooling stages. It is also dual-fuel capable. ColorTouch is able to intelligently control your HVAC system and displays the proper equipment status, in terms of heating and cooling stages turned on. The T5900 Touchscreen Thermostat is compatible with Wi-Fi accessories including the Skyport Wi-Fi key.
With the addition of a Skyport Wi-Fi key this thermostat becomes smarter and more convenient. The Wi-Fi key allows the T5900 Touchscreen Thermostat to connect to your Wi-Fi network and now be managed through a mobile app on your Android or iOS smart device (smartphone, tablet, iPhone, iPad). Through the app monitor energy usage and see how it can be reduced while you're not home to save you money. Also through the mobile app you can view service alerts and notifications, see visual weather displays and weather forecasts, and even send yourself or family members messages/reminders via text from your smartphone that will show up on the display screen of the thermostat.
Simple as You Want™ Operation
"Simple Stat" operation mode provides enlarged display numbers and fewer display items, making it perfect for the most basic users. "Simple as You Want" operation allows ColorTouch to be installed as a programmable or non-programmable thermostat. "Simple as You Want" operation also makes the thermostat easy to use. For example; it allows the user to remove the cooling references for homes without air conditioning.
Time Period Programming has never been so fast and simple to implement on a thermostat. The intuitive "Time Period" Scheduler automatically changes the temperature and mode for up to four periods per day. This allows for comfortable temperatures for sleeping, waking, and daytime, plus an energy savings mode for when no one is home. Customize every aspect of your "Time Period" Schedule with great flexibility.
"At-a-Glance" screen shows the user heating and cooling status, as well as the room temperature. Heat and Cool indicators give "at-a-glance" information on heating and cooling, so users can easily see if air conditioning or heating equipment is on. An example of Heat and Cool indicators is on the left. The room temperature is 79 degrees and thermostat is cooling to 75 degrees. Room temperature is blue color to show the equipment is running. The ColorTouch thermostat can be wired with an Outdoor Sensor so that the outside temperature can be displayed right on the screen. The user has the option to display the high and low temperatures for the day.
Nighttime dimmer for bedroom thermostats gives the user the ability to adjust the time the dimmer is on. Users can adjust the active brightness and the idle brightness with complete darkness being an option when dimmer is idle. When user touches the screen during nighttime dimmer operation, the screen's backlight temporarily returns to a useable brightness.
Energy Usage Info
Easy access to Energy Usage Information lets you easily see how much energy has been used to heat and cool for the past seven days. Runtime graphs help you evaluate energy conservation options, giving you the opportunity to decrease energy costs. View the heating or cooling runtimes separated by stages. Excessive runtimes indicate that it may be time for equipment maintenance.
With ColorTouch Security you have the ability to enforce temperature set point limits so that the system runs within set temperature parameters. Now no one can run the air conditioning too low or the heat too high. Security settings also give you the option for automatic screen lock. This locks the screen minutes after it has been touched. Unlocking the screen requires a pass code to enable access (eliminates kids or guests from changing the thermostat settings).
Daylight Savings mode automatically adjusts ColorTouch clock when necessary.
Easily choose what settings you want to import into your thermostat from an SD memory card including your Custom Photos, Dealer Info, Schedule, and Thermostat Name. Using the SD card you may save settings from an existing ColorTouch thermostat that can be exported to other thermostats (so you don't have to program each individual thermostat). The SD card is prepared using the ColorTouch Assistant software application.
(SD memory card, 64Mb minimum, sold separately)
Customize the look of ColorTouch with faceplates to match your home decor. Options include white(supplied) - black, silver and wood grain each sold separately.
ColorTouch is multilingual (English, Spanish and French).
IMPORTANT NOTE: Thermostat firmware version 1.11 and below requires 2GB or larger SD cards for upgrading.

- Powerful, easy to set up and use Review by Paul B
Powerful, easy to set up and use
What a great device. Well thought out, full featured stat with lots of capabilities.. both internet and HVAC. The cloud "skyport" features allow me to remotely review the performance of multiple thermostats by multiple properties. The mobile apps are great and easy for my wife to use. The local API lets me monitor and manage my HVAC with my ISY home automation controller.
I've configured the stage 2 heat calls based on the to different construction types / thermal performance of my house. Each thermostat maintains comfort. I also use the humidity control feature to run humidity even when the furnace is not running (fan, hot water, humidifier). Our health was remarkably better this past winter in dry michigan, with a house that remained around 34%.
In addition to skyport cloud, which I use as a traveler, I also use the local API function and track runtimes and cycles.
I evaluated the competitors before landing on the T5900, and very glad I chose to get 2 of them for my house.

- Fullest feature set Thermostat out there, Great value Review by Paul B
Fullest feature set Thermostat out there, Great value
I have 2 furnaces and installed 2 of these within in the last 2 months. Very happy with them. If you want to just remotely control your stat, this is as good a choice as any. If you want to optimize comfort and cost of operating your HVAC system in addition to remotely controlling it, there is no better choice.
The difference between the T5900 and T5800 is that the T5900 has humidity sensing and humidify control functions. That's it. Both Thermostats need the wifi card if you want the communication functions
* HVAC functionality: At its core this is a great thermostat. Up to 3 stage heat and 2 stage cooling. Stage 2 and 3 deadband behavior is programmable, you can configure how/when the stages are called based on your installation. Supports heat pump & dual fuel.
Humidification can run separate from the heat call (T5900 only) which has been great for our dry winters. Keeps the fan running to distribute air and adds humidity to it. Less complaints about dryness in my house.
There is an auxiliary terminal for the stat can be configured for control for one of: Humidifier, dehumidifier or stage 3 heat.
There is an optional temp sensor that can be installed and configured for remote indoor, outdoor, supply or return sensing.
Dehumidification is supported without a dehumidifier through the AC with a temp limiter: If humidity is too high, run ac to X degrees below setpoint to get the house comfortable.
* Beautiful configurable touch screen interface. Make it as simple or information filled as you'd like.
* Schedules. Easy and practical. Can be set from the Thermostat, or from the skyport cloud web app if you add the wifi card.
* Communications (with optional Skyport card). Connects to your house wireless network (2.4ghz 802.11 G, WPA2 AES). Both stats have hooked up and stayed connected.
Mobile apps: Android, IOS and Blackberry mobile apps to control temperature, away and also view runtimes
Skyport cloud: A cloud/web service that lets you manage your thermostats by property, see runtimes, change schedules and change settings. You can also set it to send you alerts for over / under temp or humidity thresholds, firmware upgrade notice, airfilter and humidity pad replacement.
Local lan access: If you are web app savy, you can query and command the thermostat from REST (web) applications in your house. I use the ISY HA controller and there is a powerful 3rd party app called venlink to monitor and control the thermostat via the ISY.
* Support. There is a support site and also a developer site that documents the REST calls to the thermostat. Venstar is very responsive to emails as well.
Things to know
* You do need to buy the skyport card feature for using mobile apps, skyport cloud and local lan access. Since there is no monthly subscription for these services, this was an easy choice for me.
* The touch interface is not as fast to respond as a mobile device. Not in a bad way, but a little different. It gets more pronounced as skyport cloud and local lan access features keep the stat busy. Once you have it working and everyone in the house used to it, its fine.
* Make sure how many wires you have pulled to your thermostat location before buying and planning use of features. In addition to common, the power, or red wire is needed from the furnace to power the thermostat . Also, 1 each for common, heat stage 1-n and cool stage 1-n, fan and humidify. Older homes with older HVAC systems can have as few as 4 wires pulled to an older thermostat.
As an example, I am using 2 stage heat, 1 stage cooling and humidify. I got to 7 wires needed very quickly. I had new HVAC units being installed so I had new 8 conductor wire ran to the thermostats. My previous locations had 4 and 5 wires, not enough to support what was needed.
Venstar has an "add a wire" device that might help if you are retrofitting your existing HVAC unit and need more wires. Another option is to plug in a 24VAC transformer near the thermostat and power it that way, reducing the need for one wire.

I love it. Far above the previous thermostats I have owned. The Wifi works perfectly and is exactly what I wanted and needed.
