  • What's Included
  • Control the lights and appliances in your home remotely from a single home automation controller. Plug the Tabletop UPB Controller into your wall and you'll be able to turn your lights on and off and dim them, as well as manage audiovisual or kitchen appliances. Program the eight buttons on this tabletop controller to control individual devices or groups of devices at the press of a button, all using Universal Powerline Bus technology.

Place this controller anywhere it's convenient: You can control lights in your kitchen without getting out of bed, or turn on your bedroom lights and electric blanket before you head upstairs. Similar to the standard X10 protocol, Universal Powerline Bus technology communicates over your existing power wires, so no rewiring is necessary in order to use this home automation controller. But UPB benefits include its higher reliability, since its signal strength is stronger than X10, with increased electrical noise resistance. UPB technology is not X10 compatible.

UPB technology allows enough individually addressable devices to control even large residential environments, usually without the need for phase coupling and without affecting or being affected by adjacent home environments. Installation is extremely simple. Just plug the AC power cord into any AC outlet in your home. With the free, downloadable UpStart software and a UPB Interface Module (sold separately), you can use your computer to configure and/or control UPB devices.

Use your Tabletop UPB Controller to create scenes. Up to 16 functions can be linked so that with the touch of a button, you can dim your lights, turn on your audiovisual equipment, and close your drapes. The UPB Appliance Modules and Lamp Modules required to perform these functions are sold separately.

What might have been a problem turned out to be a very satisfactory purchase thanks to Smarthome's cooperative customer support policies. The original tabletop controller delivered was DOA. I phoned and described the problem: Smarthome immediately shipped a replacement unit AND sent to me a pre-paid shipping kit to RMA the defective item. Technically, I like the high degree of individual programmability provided using the no-charge UP-Start programming software. All in all, the UPB items are turning out to be superior to X-10 which I have been using for years.
