Watch Your Holiday Guests Arrive ... On Your TV Screen!
 | | | The Problem | |
Wish you could use your existing TV to know when your holiday guests arrive? So did one of our customers who called Smarthome to see if Smarthome offered any products that could help him. He thought it would be a great way to alert him when visitors arrived, just in case he didn't hear the doorbell over the football game. He also said the system would provide value to him year-round, as a quick way to tell if the person standing at the door was a friend, or just another door-to-door salesman.
We told him Smarthome offers hundreds of products that could help him. All we needed to do was determine his needs so we could put together a product list.
 | | | The Q&A | |
We asked him a few questions and learned that he had a pretty standard home, with no major architectural problems to worry about.
We asked if he had a fairly new TV with RCA A/V input jacks on the back. He did.
We asked if he needed a wireless camera (typically less reliable and more expensive), or if he minded running a simple video cable through the attic. He was fine with running a basic cable.
We asked if he wanted the TV to switch to the camera all the time (more products needed), or only when he's already watching TV (fewer products needed). He said only when he's watching TV already.
We asked if he wanted the TV to automatically switch back to what he was watching after a set-period of time (more products needed), or if he would rather manually change the TV input with his remote control (fewer products needed). He said he was fine changing it back himself with his remote control.
Lastly, we asked if he needed a color or black & white camera. He wasn't sure, so we recommended black & white, since black & white cameras work so much better in lower-light situations.
 | | | The Shopping List | | Once we knew a little more about his situation, we were able to recommend the following shopping list:
1 Wireless X10 Motion Sensor (#4086V2)
1 X10 Transceiver Base (#4005X)
1 Submersible Black & White Bullet Camera w/100' Cable (#7544BNN)
1 X10 Infrared Controller
1 X10 Maxi Controller* (#4020)
