Solution of the Week
Get Notified When Virtually Any Condition is Detected
 | If you've read our last Solution of the Week, you learned how you can Be Notified by Phone When the Weather Endangers Your Home, giving you a chance to rectify the problem before it becomes a disaster.
But did you know that you can also notified by phone when virtually any condition is detected? It's easy with our wide selection of sensing devices that, when used with a notifying device, can alert you if someone opens a door, if motion is detected inside, or if wind conditions get out of control, just to name a few of this.
 | | | Choosing the Sensing Device | |
To set it up, you'll need one general-purpose sensing device, or more if the notifying device you choose allows multiple inputs. We offer a wide variety of such devices that measure such conditions as:
All the sensors shown above operate on a simple contact closure. Just like a light bulb comes on when you flip a wall switch, these sensors will close or open a set of low-voltage electrical contacts when the condition triggers the sensor. For example, if we're using a temperature sensor, the unit will close a set of contacts when it gets too cold (based on the temperature setpoint you select). Once the room temperature warms up and goes above the setpoint you selected, the contacts will open. It's this contact closure and opening that these sensors report. That's why you often see sensors being classified as Normally Open or Normally Closed.
To monitor a home for a drop in temperature and notify someone of a problem, you'll need a temperature sensor like the High/Low Temperature Sensor #7150, Slimline Temperature Alert Sensor 7151, or Preset Low Temperature Sensor 7152. These sensors will trigger when the temperature drops or exceeds a certain value. Now all you need is a device that can call out for help.
 | | | Choosing the Notifying Device | | Next, you'll need one notifying device. Our most popular models include:
These units connect to any of the sensing devices via almost any variety of wire (like speaker wire, thermostat wire or any other low-voltage wire). These notifying devices detect the low-voltage electrical contact closures or openings, and respond by calling the phone numbers you provided and playing a message.
Note: It's important to note that these devices should only be used to call your phone numbers (i.e. home phone, wireless phone, office phone) or anyone else that's expecting the call and knows how to respond. They should NOT be used to dial 911 or any other emergency service. Emergency service providers may ignore the message, or may even penalize you with steep false alarm fines.
