How do I have lights turn off and on automatically when people enter and leave a room?
With the high costs of electricity, now more than ever, it makes sense to look at ways to cut consumption and reduce your energy bills. Replacing wall switches with motion sensors or wall timers is an easy do-it-yourself project and it can automate a room's lighting. We have many devices that can save money by automatically turning off lights when no one is in the room.
Timer Switches for the bathroom, basement, and garage
Based on the feedback from our customers, the basement, garage, and bathrooms are the best candidates to automate with a timer switch. It's very easy to just leave a room without thinking about the light switch, or in the case of a bathroom exhaust fan, just leave it running. The Leviton Countdown Timer Switches can automatically turn off electrical loads after 15, 30, or 60 minutes.
Installing these Timer Switches is pretty easy and you don't have to be a journeyman electrician to hook them up. These switches go in place of an existing mechanical wall switch. For controlling up to 600 watts of incandescent lights, use model # 4253AW or 4253AI. After turning off the power and removing the trim plate, remove the two wires from mechanical switch and attach them to the new Timer Switch. Connect the ground wire in the electrical box to the green wire on the Timer Switch. For the other three models, which can control motors, fluorescent lights, and up to 1000 watts of incandescent lights; you'll need a third neutral wire connected to the Timer Switch. For those who need a longer countdown time, we have the old-fashion Spring Wound Wall Switch Timer that will count down from 12 hours.
To turn on the lights, simply press one of the top three buttons. The Leviton electronic Timer Switch will begin counting down to zero, at which point it turns off the light. Except for a slight 'click' sound when turned on or off, the timer is completely silent. Solid-state electronics and high wattage capacity insure years of trouble-free service and it's backed by a two-year warranty.
Motion sensors with timers
If you would like to have the lights automatically come on when someone enters a room, we have in-wall motion sensors. These units are a great solution when there is a light switch that is difficult to reach. Some family members may not want to reach around an obstacle to turn off the lights, so they just stay on all the time. Our most popular motion sensor switch, Leviton Wall Mounted Occupancy Sensor will detect movement up to 20 feet away with a 150-degree field of view. Once motion is seen, it turns on up to 500 watts of incandescent, (400 watts fluorescent) lighting for a defined period of time. Like the Countdown Timer Switches above, these units also have a timer that will switch off the power 15 seconds to 15 minutes (you select the time) after motion is no longer detected. If there is a three-way circuit that needs automating, the #2523W or 2523I Wall Mounted Occupancy Sensor will do the job. It works in place of existing mechanical 3-way switches and will only control incandescent lighting.
Screw in Motion Sensors:
This Screw-In Motion Sensor Switch is fitted between the light bulb and the fixture. It has a motion sensor that will turn on the electricity to the light bulb when it sees motion within 15 feet. Four minutes after the motion stops, it turns off the power. This makes a great addition to locations where a lamp holder does not enclose the light bulb; basements, garages, walk-in closets, and more.
All these units are self-contained, which means they don't rely on a central controller or computer to operate. While our X10 Home Automation products and Computer Controllers can certainly do these functions and much more, sometimes, the de-centralized and simplest approach is often the best.
These products are only a few of the cool items we have that can help automate your home. We have more complex motion sensors for indoor and outdoor use. Check out all the products at the links below:
