INSTEON vs. X10

Whether you're just getting started in home automation or you're ready to upgrade from X10 to INSTEON, the first dual-mesh network that combines powerline signals with wireless radio frequency, selecting from a confusing array of products can be daunting. To help you better understand the benefits of INSTEON in comparison to legacy X10 products, these products have been placed side by side with a comprehensive list of detailed benefits. If you still have questions, you can always contact Smarthome's customer care department for help.
X10 distributes command signals over your existing powerlines. INSTEON takes this a step further: This dual-mesh network combines wireless radio frequency (RF) with your home's existing electrical wiring for maximum reliability, and since it's compatible with your legacy X10 products, you won't need to replace all of your existing switches and modules until you're ready. INSTEON confirms every message to insure that messages are received error-free, automatically retransmitting corrupted messages to be sure that your commands are obeyed. In addition, every INSTEON device acts as a two-way repeater, so an INSTEON network actually becomes stronger and more reliable as more products are added.
Getting started:
For maximum reliability, the INSTEON network requires that you install two SignaLinc RFs, plug-in devices that not only extend the range of signals but also eliminate the need for phase couplers, ensuring that commands sent from one electrical phase to another will be received and obeyed. If you're just getting started with your INSTEON network, three starter kits are available, all of which include the two SignaLinc RFs. Choose the Plug-In Dimmer INSTEON Starter Kit, the Dimmer Switch INSTEON Starter Kit, or the Keypad Dimmer INSTEON Starter Kit.
Value-Oriented ICON Line
On a budget? Smarthome's ICON line of INSTEON-enabled lighting and appliance controllers is available at a lower price since these products don't include several of the more advanced technological and aesthetic features. This growing line of products includes the 300-watt ICON Dimmer Switch, the 10-amp ICON On/Off Switch, and the plug-in ICON Appliance Module and ICON Lamp Dimmer.
Upgrades:
INSTEON products are flexible enough to match the dcor of any home and reflect the changing tastes of any homeowner. Once you've installed your switches and keypads you can take advantage of numerous color-change kits and options to adjust the original products to your taste.
INSTEON SwitchLincs come with white paddles, but ivory, almond, black, brown and gray paddles are also available. Each set comes with two paddles to change the color of two SwitchLincs in your home. KeypadLinc frames are also available in almond, black, brown and gray.
Unlike with other switches and keypads, it's also possible to change the LED lights in INSTEON SwitchLincs. Each SwitchLinc Light Pipe Kit comes with two pairs of color pipes to change the color of the LED brightness bar as well as the status light at the bottom of the switch to red, green, amber, or blue. Since they install easily, you'll be able to change the color of the LEDs whenever you want. Four-packs are also available in single colors: Choose blue, green, red or amber.
Change the appearance of any KeypadLinc with the KeypadLinc Multi-Color Kit, a set of diffuser lenses that easily install in the KeypadLinc V2 to change the LEDs to red, green, amber, or blue.
Pre-printed labels are included with every KeypadLinc, but for the ultimate in personalization, order Custom Keypad Buttons, laser-etched replacement buttons for the INSTEON KeypadLinc V2 Dimmer. Each button is laser-etched with your detailed room description. Custom-etched buttons available for purchase in a set of 6 (2 large and 4 small) or set of 8 (8 small).
