Solution of the Week

Never Walk to Bed in the Dark Again
It's 11:15 pm and it's already past your bedtime. But before you hop into bed, you have to go downstairs and turn off the lamp in the family room, as well as the front porch light. As you feel your way through the dark house on the way back to the stairwell, you stumble on the cat toy that Tigger left behind. Now, by the time you actually make it to your bedroom door, you're wide awake again. Sound familiar? Why do all that when, with just a few smart lighting control products, you can control any light in the house from your nightstand. Keep reading to see how easy it is ?

The Solution
Although every home is set up differently, we've found that the most common lights that Smarthome customers want to control remotely are:
  • An overhead light fixture in the family room
  • A plug-in lamp in the family room
  • The front porch light
  • The overhead kitchen light fixture
The most common locations from which they want to control these lights are the master bedroom and from the sofa across the home entertainment center.
The Shopping List
To control the overhead light fixtures in the family room and kitchen, as well as the porch light, you'll need in-wall dimmers. We recommend using dimmers that support scene lighting (click here to learn more about scene lighting). Depending on the style of dimmer switch you prefer, those will be either the SwitchLinc Plus (#2386W) or ToggleLinc Plus (#23896W). If you like Decora paddle-style switches, select SwitchLinc Plus. If you prefer the toggle style found in most homes, choose the ToggleLinc Plus.To control the family room lamp, we recommend using a LampLinc Plus plug-in dimmer. To complete the system, you'll need a wireless remote kit (to control the lights from the sofa) and a Maxi Controller (to control the lights from your nightstand and to help you program the dimmers). Altogether, your order should look something like this:
SwitchLinc
Plus

(#2386W)
LampLinc
Plus

(#2000SLS)
Maxi
Controller

(#4020)
Wireless
Remote Kit

(#4000)
  • 3 — #2386W SwitchLinc Plus, White (for the overhead lights in the family room, kitchen and front porch)
  • 1 — #2000SLS LampLinc Plus (for the family room plug-in lamp)
  • 1 — #4020 Maxi Controller (for the nightstand and to program the system)
  • 1 — #4000 Wireless Remote Kit (for the sofa)
  • Or order together and save! (Purchase item #1161A)
Or, if you prefer Toggle-style switches
like those found in most homes, order:
ToggleLinc
Plus

(#23896W)
LampLinc
Plus

(#2000SLS)
Maxi
Controller

(#4020)
Wireless
Remote Kit

(#4000)
  • 3 — #23896W ToggleLinc Plus, White (for the overhead lights in the family room, kitchen and front porch)
  • 1 — #2000SLS LampLinc Plus (for the family room plug-in lamp)
  • 1 — #4020 Maxi Controller (for the nightstand and to help program the system)
  • 1 — #4000 Wireless Remote Kit (for the sofa)
  • Or order together and save! (Purchase item #1161B)
The Setup: Basic Method
Once you've received the equipment, simply install the switches according to the directions here. Next, plug in the LampLinc module between the lamp you want to control and the outlet.Next, you'll need to assign individual X10 address for each SwitchLinc, ToggleLinc or LampLinc you want to control remotely. X10 addresses consist of a "house code" (represented by the letters A-P) and a "unit code" (represented by the numbers 1-16). It doesn't matter which X10 addresses you use, so long as they begin with the same letter. We do recommend not using house code "A" because that's the default house code and the one your neighbors are most likely to use if they ever get a similar system. To program each X10 address, you'll need the Maxi Controller to enter the programming codes and assign the addresses. Once that's complete, you now have the flexibility of being able to turn those lights off with a single press of the "All Lights Off" button on the Maxi Controller. Conversely, hitting the "All Lights On" button will turn all the controlled lights on as well. To remotely control individual lights, simply enter the commands using the individual buttons on the Maxi Controller, or with the X10 remote control and RF base that connects into any nearby outlet.
The Setup: Advanced Method
Because you selected SwitchLinc/ToggleLinc dimmers and LampLincs that support scene lighting, you can also create an "All Off" scene. For example, with just one press of any button on the remote, you can turn off the lights with a slow fade rate, giving you a few minutes to safely make your way to the bedroom before the lights turn off completely. To program the "All Off" scene, simply follow the directions in Whole-House Scene Lighting 101.
