Spring Wound Timers

Another low cost solution with easy installation and simple control are the spring wound timers made by Intermatic. These timers may remind you of traditional timers built into a wall switch. Simply twist the timer to your desired run time and the mechanical design that breaks the circuit completely at the end of the timing cycle you specify, turning the light off. They are available in different colors and several time increments from 15 minutes to 12 hours. The main advantage of these switches is that they do not require any electricity to operate.

Basic Push Button Timer Control Switches

An easy to install and inexpensive switch with basic push button control is manufactured by Leviton. They offer two different 5-button timer switches in different colors. The top four buttons on the switch are pre-programmed to turn on the light it controls when the button is pressed and then turn off the light in increments of 10/20/30/60 minutes or 5/10/15/30 minutes. The bottom button on each switch is for manually turning the light off.

Occupancy Sensors

Occupancy sensors use passive infrared (PIR) technology, which recognizes movement and turns a light on when someone enters a room and off when the leave. The delayed off adjustment can be set from 15 seconds to 15 minutes and a manual off button is built in. An added feature of this product is that an ambient-light override prevents lights from being turned on when there is sufficient daylight. Occupancy sensors are available in different colors, some able to control multiple loads and work in three way applications.

Programmable Wall Timers
There are numerous options for timer that can be programmed manually. Leviton makes a 24-hour On/Off LCD switch that may be programmed in 30 minute intervals. Aube designed countdown timers that can schedule 7 On/Off times per week. Additionally, they have a solar timer that will automatically turn light on or off based on sunrise and sunset. For an all in one solution, Intermatic has a heavy duty timer with a digital time display that can control up to 6 different On/Off settings per day up to 7 days per week and programmed to sunrise and sunset.
