Enhanced Control Over Room Lights and Fans with Home Automation

A busy day usually equates to having a lot on your mind. You enter into a room, do whatever it is you need to do, and then leave all while your mind races with what else you need to accomplish before day's end. It's easy to see how you can forget to turn off the lights or ceiling fan before leaving a room. Such forgetfulness will only make your energy bill go up thus causing your wallet to thin-down. A modern day remedy to enhance your control over a room's electronic amenities is the integration of home automation. Home automation starts with the addition of a timer or sensor to a bathroom, kitchen, garage, office, basement, closet, laundry room, or any other room that can benefit from smart technology. Home automation helps to curb forgetfulness so you can focus on the more important aspects of your day.

The Timer Switch

INSTEON's KeypadLinc Timer is a simple way to assure that a room's lights or ceiling fan turn off after a specific amount of time determined and programmed by you. The KeypadLinc Timer provides up to eight timing options from two minutes to four hours and includes the ability to function as a standard on/off switch. It can handle a maximum load of 600 watts at five amps and easily integrates into an existing INSTEON network. In addition, the KeypadLinc Timer works with INSTEON's SmartLinc allowing for remote operation from a mobile smarthphone providing for even more control of your home's electrical accessories.

The Standalone Timer Switch

Replace your ordinary and dated mechanical switch with a standalone timer switch such as the popular Leviton Countdown Timer Switch or for a more retro approach the rotatable-knob Spring Wound Wall Switch is also an option. These particular types of switches are easy to install and do not require expert electrician skills to wire into your home. Shutdown your home's electricity, remove the existing wall plate, detach the wires from the old switch and reconnect them to the new timer switch, connect the ground wire in the electrical box to the green wire on the timer switch, screw the newly wired timer switch back into the wall and turn the electricity back on. At this stage, installation is essentially finished.

Operating the Leviton Countdown Timer Switch is simple: Press one of the buttons and the room's lights will turn on with an audible "click" sound. This operation enables the timer to begin counting down to zero where the lights will then shut off with another "click" sound. No other noise is generated during operation and with solid-state components and high-wattage capacity, the Leviton Countdown Timer Switch promise to operate for the foreseeable future.

The Motion Sensor with Onboard Timer

Go hands free with motion sensor technology. Turning on a light by simply walking into a room is not only impressive, but quite convenient. The Leviton Wall Mounted Occupancy Sensor detects within a 150-degree view, sensing for movement up to 20 feet away. Up to 500 watts of incandescent lighting or 400 watts of fluorescent lighting can be used. Similar to countdown timers, these types of switches will begin to countdown and turn off a room's lights between 15 seconds and 15 minutes depending on what you choose. This smart technology is even aware of other light! If enough light already exists in the room, the motion sensor will cease to operate. Several different versions of such switches exist such as a three-way in-wall sensor which replaces a standard mechanical three-way switch.

The Motion Sensing Light Adapter

One the easiest ways of adding automation to your home is with Smarthome's Screw-in Motion Sensing Light Adapter. This simple adapter uses Passive Infrared (PIR) motion sensing technology and can detect movement within a 360 degree field of vision at up to 16 feet or 5 meters away. Enter into a room and the bulb will automatically turn on. Leave the room or stop moving and the light will then shut off. Onboard settings allow you to adjust and fine tune the adapter to your personal liking. It requires no external wiring or any other kind of advanced setup. Remove the currently installed bulb, install the screw-in the Motion Sensing Light Adapter, install a bulb into the Screw-in Motion Sensing Light Adapter, and you're done. The adapter can screw into a lamp or ceiling based light socket and turns most common bulbs into a smart bulb.
