Fun, Easy KeypadLinc Scene Ideas

An INSTEON Keypad Dimmer Switch can do more than provide an attractive option for turning on a couple of lights from one location. You can use your keypad controller to create scenes that can make coming home and leaving quick and easy. Here are a few simple ideas that can be integrated into your KeypadLinc to maximize its capabilities. You can link hundreds of lights to each KeypadLinc button if you wish, but each dimmable light will need to be connected to an INSTEON-compatible INSTEON SwitchLinc Dimmer or a INSTEON LampLinc Dimmer (non-dimmable lights should connect to INSTEON SwitchLinc Relays or IINSTEON On/Off Modules).

Follow these instructions for one-button lighting scenes accessible from your entryway.

Home Scene

Home Scene

Use this scene when you arrive home after dark. With the press of a button, you'll turn on your porch light, entryway light, and a light in your kitchen or living room to light your path through the house.

Arriving Home After Dark

You don't need to stumble through your house when you get home after sunset. By linking one of your small KeypadLinc buttons to a few lights, you'll have a clear pathway through your house accessible with a single button press.

How to set it up

  1. Decide which lights you want to include in the scene. For a Home scene, we suggest your porch light, an entryway light, and perhaps a hall light and a bedroom or kitchen light.
  2. Set your KeypadLinc into scene setup mode by pressing and holding your designated scene button for 10 seconds and then pressing the SET button at the bottom of the KeypadLinc.
  3. If you're linking to a SwitchLinc Dimmer, press and hold the paddle top for 10 seconds. Most products will link in a similar manner, either by pressing and holding ON or by holding the SET button for 10 seconds.
  4. Press any button on your KeypadLinc to exit scene setup mode.
Away Scene

Away Scene

A well-lit home is an excellent theft deterrent, but leaving numerous lights burning for hours on end can be an expensive waste of electricity. By creating an "Away" scene that you can activate with a single button press on your way out the door, you'll enjoy peace of mind, knowing that your home looks occupied to thieves while the few lamps that burn are only running at a fraction of their available power.

Making Your Home Look Occupied When You're Away

This scene sets up similarly to the previous scene, but instead of turning lights on when you get home, you'll use one of your KeypadLinc's buttons to turn lights on when you leave to give the illusion that someone's home.

How to set it up

  1. Decide which lights you want to include in the scene. For an Away scene, we suggest your porch light, an entryway light, and perhaps a couple of lights in rooms visible from the street.
  5. Follow the instructions in the individual devices' quick-start guides to adjust the on-level brightness for the scene lights so you're not wasting electricity by leaving lights burning.
All Off

All Off

Are you often in a hurry to leave for work in the morning? Then the last thing you'll want to do is rush through the house turning off errant lights. By programming one of your KeypadLinc's scene buttons to be an "All Off" key, you'll be able to hit one button on your way out the door without worrying about wasting electricity the rest of the day.

You can even personalize your KeypadLinc Buttons with custom laser-etched Small Custom Keypad Buttons.

Creating a Dedicated "All Off" Button

You don't need to run through the house to turn off every light before you leave. Follow these instructions to set up a dedicated "All Off" button on your KeypadLinc, and you'll be able to push one button on the way out the door and know that no lights will remain burning while you're at work. You'll need two available KeypadLinc buttons in order to set this up, but once set up, it will only require a single dedicated button. In the instructions below, the final "All Off" button is button A.
