Distributing Music from a Smartphone or Tablet

There are many ways to stream and distribute music from a Smartphone or Tablet. From using a simple cable connection with a receiver to installing an advanced audio distribution system, music can span the entirety of a home for all to enjoy. Utilizing a home's Audio/Video Receiver (AVR), music can easily be distributed from one room to multiple rooms and on to an outside patio, yard, or pool area. The solutions provided below offer various methods for you to enjoy musical entertainment throughout a home.

Listening to Music through a Home Theater

The simplest way of distributing music to an AVR is to use a cable. The 3.5mm Plug to RCA Stereo Y-adapter connects to one of the auxiliary inputs on an AVR via the RCA connectors while the 3.5mm end of the cable plugs directly into the headphone output jack found on most Smartphones or Tablets. After all connections have been made, select the correct auxiliary input on the AVR, choose some music on the Smartphone or Tablet, and enjoy!

Another method of distributing music from a Smartphone or Tablet is to utilize Bluetooth. Most new Smartphones and Tablets have built-in Bluetooth functionality. By connecting a Bluetooth Stereo Receiver to an AVR, a Smartphone or Tablet can wirelessly stream music to that AVR. This method provides wireless freedom of up to approximately 30-35 feet (between the AVR and a Smartphone or Tablet) allowing comfortable music control from a distance.

Distributing Music to Multiple Rooms

Music from a Smartphone or Tablet can expand into other locations within a home as well by adding a Speaker Selector to an AVR. Speaker Selectors are available from two to eight zones, allowing you to put up to eight pairs (each zone supports a pair) of speakers in different locations throughout a home. Whether the speakers are in-wall, in-ceiling, or outdoor this setup allows music to be distributed and enjoyed no matter where you are at around your home. The amount of zones a Speaker Selector has pertains to how many locations it can distribute to. For example, a 4-zone Speaker Selector provides up to a total of four individual rooms that music can be distributed to; again noting that each zone supports a pair of speakers, so a 4-zone speaker system will support up to eight speakers. Everyone can enjoy music out by the pool or while working in the garage, in the home office or in the kitchen - all at the same time!

For added control, in-wall impedance matching volume controllers can be installed inline between the speaker selector and the speakers to better manage volume within a room. Impedance matching volume controllers allow the attached speakers and AVR to operate at top performance even when all speakers are being used.

It should be noted that attaching multiple speakers to an AVR can cause overheating or possible damage over time because the amplifier within the AVR is being pushed to its maximum capability. To avoid potential damage, it is recommended to use an equipment cooler to help maintain safe temperatures when an AVR is operating under a heavy load.

Gaining Maximum Control over a Home's Audio Entertainment

The best solution for distributing music throughout a home is to use a stand-alone audio distribution system completely separate from an AVR. Such a system typically consists of an amplifier, music server(s) and other components, methods of interaction, and other proprietary additions.

An example of such a system is the NuVo Technologies Grand Concerto 6-Source 8-Zone System. It is a premium audio distribution system that allows multiple sources, zones, and speakers to be used at the same time. With this system, someone can listen to music streaming from a Smartphone in one room while someone else listens to music from their Tablet in another room. This system includes its own amplifier and provides an OLED touchscreen display to interact with the different attached sources such as a NuVo Satellite Radio Tuner or a NuVo MP3 music server. The entire system can also be controlled wirelessly from a Smartphone through the use of a NuVo Audio Streaming System and the NuVo Android or iOS application. These types of systems are recommended for those who want only want the best listening experience and control over a home's audio entertainment.
