  • What's Included
  • The Serial Insteon PowerLinc Modem is a serial-based home automation interface that allows PC- and hardware-based automation controllers to control Insteon -compatible lights, appliances, heating/air conditioning systems and alarm systems directly via the Insteon network. This home automation interface uses simple RS-232 commands, allowing any device with a programmable serial port to send Insteon commands easily, making controllers such as SimpleHomeNet's and Universal Devices' IP bridges instantly Insteon compatible. The dual-band interface sends and receives both powerline and radio frequency (RF) Insteon signals, so it doubles as an Access Point. This makes it ideal for new Insteon installs and if have or plan to use an RF-only Insteon -compatible remote, thermostat, motion sensor and contact sensor. The RF signal can bypass electrical noise or attenuation near the PC and it pulls many of the "distant" Insteon devices one hop closer, which can expand the size of potential installations into even larger homes and commercial buildings.

    New features:
    • Built-in Dual-Band with RF function, acts like an Access Point for phase bridging and RF to/from power line
    • 1023 links (compared to around 800 links previously)
    • Added a beep sounder
    • Red/Green LED light
    • Supports faster reading and writing of the PLM's database by another controller
    • Much lighter weight
    • No pass-through outlet
Please Note: The controller connected to the Serial Insteon PowerLinc Modem must remain powered on and running the controller program connected to the controller or host at all times of usage. Additionally, the dual-band interface does not supply power to external devices.

    Other PowerLinc Options:
PowerLinc Modem - Insteon USB Interface (Dual-Band)

    Ideal for Developer Use
Hardware developers with products that include RS232 ports can use the Serial Insteon PowerLinc Modem to send and receive Insteon communications. This relieves developers from embedding Insteon chips inside their devices and provides a quick way to market without having to go through electronics re-designs or costly safety agency approvals. It also provides electronic TTL lines for direct connection to systems with embedded processors.

Please note that developing application and controls for the PLM is not for the casual home automation enthusiast. Due to the nature of this product, Smarthome's technical support staff cannot offer programming support for developers. We cannot assist in the troubleshooting or development of applications and/or code.

If you are interested in developing software for the PowerLinc or for more information about becoming an Insteon developer please click here.

Advanced support for Insteon developers is sold separately.

They can be repaired Review by ca92807
    They can be repaired

Mine failed after 3 years, but I repaired it. Just search the WWW for "Repair of 2413S PLM When the Power Supply Fails."

Failed after 3 years Review by jmine
    Failed after 3 years

I opened up the unit and it looks very well built inside. No indication of any failed component was visible. My guess is the step down transformer is the weak link. As this is the key component to the Insteon system I would hope Smartlabs is aware of these failures and is doing something to correct it in any future manufacturing of this device.

It Came Back Review by ssiemer
    It Came Back

I love the Insteon line and use it to automate our wedding venue. After two years the PowerLinc just stopped working. I checked the reviews and saw the re-boot procedure. I plugged it in while holding the set button and waited until the red light came on. I the had to unplug it and plug it back in and the green light came on. I also had to reboot my ISY 99 to get everything online. I have been very happy with the consistency and reliability of the Insteon products. I can really just set the programs and know things will just work!

    Very dependable Review by pdgear
    Very dependable

In light of several reviews saying the module is unreliable I have to say that mine's been running flawlessly for 4+ years, since 2011.

If you run a PC around the clock, this can save you the cost of an ISY-99

I use my dual-band modem to run custom software (written in Visual Basic/C++) to control my Insteon devices. It is the same as any "COM Port" programming you have ever done! Soooo easy, tonnes of examples online.

    Typical SmartHome Insteon Junk

Works for 1-2 years and then fails. No lights, no beeps, no response, reset does nothing. Going on my 3rd unit in less than 5 years.

    3 PLM's - 5 Years Review by Arizona-Automation
    3 PLM's - 5 Years

Never fails, just after the 12 month warranty, the PLM just stops working. To much invested in pulling out my Insteon network, but if I could start over, would never have gone with the PLM/Insteon solution for my automation, way to many failures after the warranty is up.

Great while it works, but terrible when (not if) it fails Review by Andrew
Great while it works, but terrible when (not if) it fails

I've been using Insteon for years and it's been great for the most part. In terms of communication infinitely more reliable than the X10 system I replaced. However that's where the joy ends. I have Insteon installed in both my home and office. Smarthome/Smartlabs/Insteon has a great technology but has failed to build their modules with any sort of reliability. This PLM is the bane of my existence, they last at most 2 years and when (not if) they fail it's an uphill battle to get them replaced. I currently need another new PLM, the last one having been replaced 5/2013 and I can either A) wait 2-3 weeks for the manufacturer/vendor to drag their feet for a replacement or B) Buy a new one. No wonder they have such a crappy warranty policy.
