  • What's Included
  • The ISY994i is one of the most advanced INSTEON controllers on the market and has numerous features to satisfy the most advanced DIY'er or seasoned home control enthusiast. If you need unbridled control, the ISY994i is your controller.

The ISY994i supports up to 256 devices and scenes, and a maximum of 300 programs. The ISY994i controller is able to configure and program INSTEON devices using INSTEON native protocols and specifications. This allows it to directly write to INSTEON devices internally instead of just in the controller, creating a more robust network. You can set up timer events and custom event triggers, as well as monitor and control all the INSTEON-compatible devices in your home from any web-browser anywhere in the world. Now you can check if the lights in your house were left on and remotely control them from your computer at the office.

    INSTEON Control
This kit includes an INSTEON Dual-Band PLM Serial Interface, allowing for direct communication with your existing INSTEON network from the ISY-99i controller. The PLM features built-in dual-band technology that sends and receives INSTEON signals via powerline and radio frequency (RF), so it doubles as an Access Point. This makes it ideal for new INSTEON installs if you have or plan to use an RF-only INSTEON-compatible devices like a remote, thermostat, motion sensor or contact sensor.

    Additional Features:
    • Control other network-enabled devices using an optional Network Module (RS-232 devices can be controlled using an ELK IP232 or Global Cache GC-100 and more)
    • Can be field upgraded to IR platform

    • Extends the capabilities of the ISY99i Series
    • An expansion slot which could be utilized to install and support other protocols such as a Zigbee
    • Increased code memory to support additional communications drivers
    • Native support for Open ADR out of the box

    • Please Note:
    • The ISY994i does not require a power supply when used with a PLM which supplies power via the RJ-45 port (for example, PLM model #2412S). ISY994i does provide a port for an optional AC adapter for instances where the PLM does not supply power, or the user prefers to supply power independent of the PLM (for example, PLM model #2413S).

Using any Java-enabled web browser, the ISY-994i gives you the ability to control, monitor, and configure all INSTEON-compatible devices from any web-browser anywhere in the world. Best of all, no software is needed to gain access to your INSTEON network. Simply bring up a browser and type in the URL of your Home Automation Controller.

Have had this controller for over two years now and can report that it is absolutely rock solid in its performance. I have just over fifty devices (mostly light/outlet switches and garage doors sensors) and it hasn't missed a beat. I use the programmatic feature significantly. If my garage doors are open for more than ten minutes, my wife and I get a text notifying us (great if we forget to close either bay). If the fireplace has been on for over two hours, same thing there - very nice in case we walk out and forget to turn it off. Also have programs running for the bathroom fans. When the light is turned on, I have the fan turn on - when the light is flipped off, the fan stays on for another five minutes before turning off.

Really appreciate the fact that it has the NTP (network time protocol) feature so it's time stays accurate (a significant problem with earlier controller models). Also slick that it adjusts sunrise and sunset depending on your location - living in the Pacific Northwest, that change can be several minutes a day.

All in all a I'm quite pleased with this unit. My only reason for not giving it a five star rating is that it can be somewhat confusing at times when defining devices. Don't get me wrong, it is a quantum leap over doing it manually, but I've seen other posts regarding controller/responder settings and I agree that can take a little getting used to depending on what you're trying to accomplish. I wouldn't let that stop you though - this controller is exactly what you need if you're at all in to home automation.

Very weak product Review by Tony

I have had this device for over 6 months and it has been nothing but headaches. The UI design in the application is very poor. I am a very technical person and design and develop software for a living. This is on my list of poorly designed applications.

If you are using a mac - forget it. This device is useless. Even though it is web ready and could be awesome if created as an HTML5 application, it is built with Java. This means that it is heavily dependent on other things. There are many security issues and at this point I cannot get the interface to open on a mac without turning off the security precautions that are not recommended to be turned off. It will open on a PC, but only from certain browsers. This is just completely ridiculous.

There are other apps that will work with it and they are mediocre at best. They certainly can't handle the heavy lifting that I need out of the device. I have too many devices for the simple apps to manage with any ease - they are just not designed for it.

Completely disappointed in this device. It is expensive for the poor quality. It is not meant for anyone not technical. My suggestion would be to stay away...

    Documentation STINKS Review by Don001
    Documentation STINKS
    Rating

While the controller itself works well most of the on line documentation is multiple generations out of date. For example if I click on the menu item "Obtain SSL Certificate" it takes me to a web page with instructions for an older version. None of the screens match, few options match (none that matter) and it is completely useless. How come a link to an on line instructions is referring to an version that hasn't shipped in YEARS! The main instructions are slightly better, they are only 4 or 20+ versions out of date (current software 4.2.18 instructions for 4.0.5). Sometimes you can figure out something by seeing how they used to do it and then trying to find something similar in the new interface.
As far as controlling from the internet or from a IOS or Android device - forget it. Their instructions send you to other peoples sights and are for XP! When I try to enable internet access all I get is an error message that says "Failed to enable Internet Access". No explanation, no hints as to why, nothing, which is the same help I get from product service...nothing.
I haven't tried other systems, but definitely wouldn't recommend this one unless local access from one computer is all you need.

If you are looking for something to control your devices from a PC this works fine. Trying to get it to connect to the internet is a crap shoot. It apparently only works with old simple systems. "product support" is useless. There are two types of error messages "Failure" with no explanation and one where none of the error terms are in the user manual or help file. It appears that they have no idea shat they mean or where they come from either.
I have had it about a week and am giving up trying to get it to connect to the internet or link to my cell phone or IPad. BTW-the "free" trials that they advertise in the package for Android and IOS do not exist.

Moved into my new house, so thought I'd upgrade from the software running on a PC. I have a few time-triggered scenes (sunrise and sunset, etc.) that control several switches and dimmers. I was routinely having to manually turn a switch on or off because the command wasn't effective. The log showed the command was sent, but the switch never reported a status change. And it was random as to the switch or on/off. I thought maybe the command was lost in a collision between an outbound command and a status transmission, so I've now added delays between sequential commands and even repeated commands. I never had this problem with my PC based system. I don't have trouble when only one switch is in a scene.

I decided to purchase this after I had a PLM fail that I was using with houselinc. Houselinc had performed great for me for 3 years. The ISY has been completely disappointing. I come from a development background and I was excited to have "more control" over my insteon devices. This device is complete crap. The java based application that runs on this suffers from security issues on both PC and MAC. At times it is difficult to even access. My lights turned on and off without fail from houselinc. Now it is intermittent whether they turn on at night. I don't understand how they charge a premium for such a faulty and and low performant device. Stay away from this. It does not work as advertised. It is a high level knowledge device so the learning curve is steep. I can easily take on most devices similar and this was no exception - I understand but could design an easier interface in my sleep. The worst part is that it does not work. When a schedule is defined - it will not continue reliably. STAY AWAY. This is garbage!!!!

I purchased one of these units as a replacement for a dedicated PC running Smarthome's HouseLinc software. When migrating the Insteon setup in my home from HouseLinc over to the ISY unit, I discovered what I consider to be a serious shortcoming in the ISY vs. HouseLinc.

Within the Insteon specification, a device may participate in a scene in one of three ways: As a controller only, as a responder only, and both as a controller and responder. When defining a scene in HouseLinc, two check-boxes are provided for each device within the scene -- one for the device to act as a controller within the scene and one for the device to act as a responder. If the device is to act as BOTH a controller and responder, you check both boxes. This last mode is often used for multi-way control of a load from buttons on multiple KeypadLinc or wall-paddle units.

However, the ISY unit supports only two of those three modes -- as a responder, and as both a controller and responder. There is no support for having a device participate as a controller only. Every device must participate as at least a responder, with the option of also participating as a controller. This is problematic if, for example, you want to define a scene where a button on multiple KeypadLinc units controls an IOLinc connected to a garage door opener. In that case, you don't want the light on the second keypad's button to be controlled by the first keypad's button or vice-versa -- you want the lights to be controlled by the status of the IOLinc's sensor only.

I corresponded with ISY tech support on this issue and they said the way to get around it would be to define two separate scenes, one that contains KeypadLinc A button and the garage door IOLinc, and another that contains KeypadLinc B button and the garage door IOLinc. While this might be manageable for two KeypadLincs, it quickly becomes unmanageable if you have, say, five or six KeypadLincs throughout the house that you want to control the garage door from you would need to define and maintain five or six separate scenes, one for each KeypadLinc.

Kudos to Smarthome's HouseLinc software developers for correctly implementing the Insteon specification within their software. I was surprised and disappointed that the developers at ISY apparently do not understand this aspect of the specification, particularly for a product that costs several hundred dollars vs. the FREE ! HouseLinc software.
