Insteon 74551 Garage Door Control & Status Kit

Remotely Monitor and Operate Your Garage Door Via Your Insteon Network
  • Open and close your garage from your smartphone - requires Insteon Hub
  • Can be used with an Insteon Hub however the included IOLinc module communicates via powerline only, so you may need a Range Extender or other dual-band Insteon devices*
  • For control from an Insteon Mini Remote, you will need a Range Extender or other dual-band Insteon devices*
  • Includes sensors that provide status on whether the garage door is open or closed
  • Compatible with traditional 2-wire garage openers only - if your garage control button features a display panel, this kit is not compatible

* The included Insteon IOLinc module communicates over powerline only, which may cause issues if you are trying to remotely operate your garage from Insteon devices on a different electrical phase (circuit) or from a Mini Remote. We recommended adding a Range Extender on the same phase to bridge the IOLinc module with Insteon RF-only or Dual-band devices.

  • Remotely monitor and control your garage door

Know if you accidentally left the garage door open and remotely close it if necessary. When the Insteon Garage Control & Status Kit is used with the Insteon Hub, you will always know whether you forgot to close the door to the garage.

    Remote Control

Whether for convenience or security, your smart phone and tablet allow you to control your garage door from anywhere you may be through the Insteon App.

    Instant Alert

With Insteon Garage Door Control & Status Kit, you can receive instant alerts via email or notifications the moment the door is opened. Requires the Insteon Hub and a home internet connection.

    Using Insteon automation

You can link a button on a KeypadLinc as a status light to indicate whether or not your garage door is open and remotely open or close the garage door from other areas of your property using that button or another button on a KeypadLinc, SwitchLinc or Mini Remote.

Add a WiFi Camera to Your Network

Set up a WiFi Camera in your garage to provide you with 24/7 surveillance of your vehicles by viewing it via your smartphone or tablet and then close (or open) your garage door from the same screen.

    How It Works

I/O Linc's output relay wires to your garage door motor just like your existing button, allowing you to remotely operate your garage. The included garage door sensor mounts to the garage door and is wired directly to I/O Linc's sensor input. Receive instant alerts when using the Insteon Hub (sold separately).

    Perfect for:

Works, but not easy or intuitive Review by Paul
Works, but not easy or intuitive

Installing the hardware is a snap. Adding the controller to the hub is a snap. Getting everything configured and working is no simple task. Do you want to configure for latching or momentary? Off closes relay or on? Or On or Off closes relay? Should the sensor trigger the relay? Should you check the sensor before triggering? When you get it working in the Android or Windows app it basically shows up as an On/Off switch. Do you turn it on to open the door, or off?

You can use the app to "monitor" if your door is open. You open the app, wait for the hub to scan all the components (which can take a while) navigate to the garage door item. In Windows and Android, I get the status, "Relay Open, Sensor Closed". That means the garage is down. There's a way to have it send alerts when opened or closed, but I haven't figured that out yet. I have the device set to On or OFF closes relay, so how do I configure On alerts or Off alerts to tell me anything other than the garage door did something?

I love the convenience, but software side of the Insteon stuff is just not intuitive. From the screenshots, it looks like the iOS apps do a better job. I'm not sure why the other platforms don't get the same experience. You should be able to tell the app that you are using this controller for a garage door. Then you could have an icon of a garage door up or down to show you status. The details of each of each setting could be pre-configured for a garage door use, or at least simplified with language that makes sense for a garage door and not an on off switch.

    Excellent Product Review by Kenneth
    Excellent Product

This thing works like a champ! I was always forgetting to close the garage door and having to turn around and go back but now I can just check my phone and it will let me know if I left it open and then I can close it........... SWEET!

Super Easy to install too! (to be fair though I was an EM2 in the Navy).

All garage doors work if you follow below Review by Joseph
All garage doors work if you follow below

I'm sure you know this already, but all garage doors are compatible even the new smart MyQ. Instead of wiring to the motor head for the momentary contact, just solder the wires to a cheap hand held one button, two button, or three button (depending on # of doors). Open the remote control and you can take a paper clip across the terminals (after you program remote) to see which two close the circuit to activate the button. Very easy :) My solder skills stink pretty bad but even I did a splended job. As more and more garage doors become smart and don't use momentary contact you will find more and more people who cant use it.

Not Compatible With Chamberlin Openers Review by Bob
    Not Compatible With Chamberlin Openers

I bought this unit to use with the garage door opener in my new house. Due to a delayed closing and business travel requirements, it took a few month's before I could get around to installing it. The unit was listed as compatible with all newer garage door openers, however, after installing it and trouble shooting it became apparent that it was not compatible with the Chamberlin MyQ systems. It's too late to return it so I'm stuck with it. At least now they added a note to the item indicating it may not be compatible with newer openes

Good but could be better. Review by yaplej
    Good but could be better.

So this kit is good but they could have made it great if the reed switch was a Normally Closed switch instead of Normally Open.

The problem is that the state of the switch is On when the garage door is closed instead of Off. It might not seems like a huge deal except in software like MobiLinc it makes the garage door appear Open instead of Closed.

There is a software override to invert the sensor but it only works until the sensor is Queried. Trigger messages are inverted but queries always return the true value of the sensor.

You can either use the software "Reverse Trigger" or get a "Normally Closed" reed switch. The reed switch included with this kit seems like a large, high quality switch that works with a decent amount of gap between the sensor and magnet. Unfortunately its not a dual function NC or NO switch. That would make this kit perfect.

Maybe Insteon will update the kit to include a dual function reed switch with three connections. Unfortunately at this point it would have been easier and cost effective to just buy the I/O Linc and buy the correctly operating reed switch separate.

I will be trying this one:
Megatronix - MGT - Magnetic Reed Switch Sensor Normally Open (N/O) / Normally Closed (N/C)

Look for one that will work with at least 1/2" gap between the sensor and magnet.

    Great Product Review by Brian
    Great Product

This worked as expected. I was able to connect it to my Universal Devices ISY hub and program it to a RemoteLinc Controller. I gave it 4 stars because I did not realize it is not "supposed to" work with multi-function switches. That being said, if you know what you are doing, you can wire it to the multi-function switch rather than the motor and get the same functionality.

Needed to Mod to work on new openers. Review by wired2work
Needed to Mod to work on new openers.

We recently move into a new house that I had new openers installed. The new openers switches are now longer standard N/O switches and are digital. My solution, since I have three doors, was to get another opener car remote, and add three pig tail wires to the switches that in the remote. Then connect those wires to the insteon modules. It works great, yes at some point I will need to change the battery, but it works..
