Good - if controlled switch is close enough to sensor Review by TomKane106
Good - if controlled switch is close enough to sensor

I set up the 2842-222 motion sensor controlling two 2477s wall switches. It works fine when the motion sensor is 40 feet from the switches, with one wooden door between them. But when the motion sensor was 50 feet way, and around a corner, behavior was intermittent. So the 120 foot range advertised is clearly optimistic. Your results may vary.

    Works Outside. Review by David
    Works Outside.

I have three of the motion sensors in use. They have worked perfectly. I have one in a sheltered area outside to control the carport light. I had to tilt it down to keep it from responding to cars driving by on the street. It took some experimenting to figure out the dusk-dawn setting as the manual's description is not helpful about what the number means when using software.
I would have been nice to have a motion sensor in a black case. A ceiling mount bracket would also have been useful.

    Works Well Review by David
    Works Well

The INSTEON wireless motion sensor works as specified. I employ several in my home. I have one in a sheltered area outside to control the carport light. I had to point it downward to keep cars passing on the street from turning on the light. The daylight sensitivity adjustment description is unclear, but after a little experimenting I got an acceptable setting. I wish they made a version of this in black or brown. A ceiling mounting bracket option would also be nice.l

Automated Outside Soffit can lights Review by Jason
    Automated Outside Soffit can lights

I used four motion sensors to turn my outdoor soffit can lights into security lighting. One by the front door and one by the garage activate my Insteon Switchlinc that controls the can lights at the front of the house. Two motion sensors at the back of the house turn on the can lights on my deck. Saved me the hassle of wiring up separate security floods. It would be nice if you could fully control the motion sensors via the Hub software instead of needed to hit the set button for certain programming functions. The mounting arm needs to be slightly longer to allow a greater range of movement as the sensors are very sensitive and I needed to point them down to keep them from tripping with passing traffic.

    Don't Last Review by BobK
    Don't Last

I've owned a few of these for monitoring 2 outside locations. I've had to replace each location's sensor more than once. They just don't last more than a year or 2. They just stop responding.

Stays on RED - Triggered Review by Paul
    Stays on RED - Triggered

I just received this and I am trying to use it as an occupancy sensor. The device always reads triggered. I have reset to may times and the first sense of movement it goes to triggered and stays there. I have tried many settings. Very unhappy.

Insteon MS works very well Review by Larry
    Insteon MS works very well

These units work almost flawlessly with the ISY994i home automation controller! I have a lamp control unit in each location to receive and repeat the signals over to the wiring.

I have seven of these units and they wok flawlessly for MS detection while we are away. I have only had one false trigger while we were away in a year of seven units so far and that room has my bird in front of it the far end of the room so I may have been a legit false trigger.

I have all my MS units direct-scene linked to the plug-in modules and the delay is imperceptible. Then my ISY turns them off at appropriate times depending on time of day etc..

Cheap supplied alkaline battery lasts about a year with high traffic usage. I have low battery detection programs that include the dark sensor as a battery monitor for each unit on my ISY994i, that sends me a text message which unit's battery needs replacing.

After linking each unit to my ISY all the settings can be set from the ISY software but the linking button has to be initiated first, for security.

I wish the AC adapter was still available but I will have to find other sources that I would be sure are cheaper anyway.

Got a final notice warning Review by Acheung
    Got a final notice warning

working fine for several months, only problem is the range to the hub is not too much, you have to keep them close, when you have several sensors, then you have difficult to put them in a 2000ft 2 stories wooden house. SMS worked good, but suddenly got a warming for sending abnormally high volume of sms alert. Don't know why, they didn't say any limit for each hub or sensors. Will call the customer to find out. My daily alerts are only 40 to 50 for 2 sensors.

    poor range Review by Paul
    poor range

Insteon claims 150 ‘ range but when I installed this about 70 feet from the hub and router it would not respond. It worked fine within about 30 feet. When I called tech support they were not surprised and said the range was about 50ft or less depending on the walls and other obstructions between the hub and the motion sensor . When I pointed out the 150ft claim on the website - that surprised them and they said it probably was with a straight run with no obstructions--- a very unlikely scenario . Totally I bought about $400 worth of equipment but the heart of it and most important to me was this motion sensor so now it is all getting returned- Customer service was good about the return but if one exterior wall between the hub and sensor reduces the range to 30’ it is almost useless as an exterior sensor . There is a range extender but it needs to be plugged in between the hub and sensor—not possible for me since hub was already near the outside wall
