  • What's Included
  • I/O Linc - Insteon to Somfy RF Drape Control Kit allows you to remotely operate drapes, blinds and other window coverings powered by Somfy RTS and/or Inteo motors and controls. Using Insteon automation, you can open and close your window coverings at the press of a button using a switch, keypad or remote control. With Hub or  HouseLinc, you can schedule the blinds to open or close according to sunrise, sunset or any other predetermined time you decide. You can even use an INSTEON-compatible thermostat to activate a scene when an upper temperature limit is reached that will turn on the air conditioner and close the blinds simultaneously to rapidly cool down your home. This kit is a convenient, easy to use solution ideal for anyone that wants to automate their Somfy RF window coverings using an Insteon network. Blocking direct sunlight and maintaining an even temperature in their home is easy with Insteon .

    How It Works
The included Somfy dry contact interface wires directly to the included I/O Linc - Insteon Low Voltage / Contact Closure Interface (using the included hook up wires), which simply plugs into an available outlet. When I/O Linc receives a signal from any linked Insteon device, it will trigger a radio frequency (RF) signal to be sent by the Somfy interface to control compatible Somfy RTS or Inteo motors, opening or closing your window coverings.

After purchase, I found the Somfy controller would 'miss' the Insteon command about 20% of the time. I then received a second unit on warranty. Same problem. Investigation revealed that neither product is faulty. The issue is that the devices are slightly incompatible as a result of the Insteon operating the Somfy controller in a way that it wasn't really designed to function. Somfy is expecting a command to drive down or a command to drive up with a neutral between commands. The I/O Link is either on or off meaning when the I/O Link initiates a drive down, it stays on in drive down (The I/O Link can only operate with it in 'Latched' mode). The Somfy reacts to this by timing out after 12 seconds. Same for the other direction. The issue seemed to be that there is no break in between 'up' and 'down' (Insteon On or Off) commands which results in this occasional failure for the Somfy to respond.

Solution: Purchase a second I/O Link. Tie the green neutral's together then have the one 'On' state from each I/O Link to either pole of the Somfy control. Then change the I/O Linc's to momentary on and presto! Working flawlessly! Added benefit is now I can send a 'down' command or an 'up' command without needing to know the shade's up or down status because each I/O link is dedicated to a single direction.

With it now working properly, Very happy with it. Even so Smarthome, a little more testing in your design process would be helpful. So, a lot of time 'fixing' this with Smarthome's poor support and shirking responsibility (but Somfy's above and beyond incredibly fantastic support) results in this product receiving 3 stars from me.

The enclosure for the Somfy component is ridiculously huge and the range is very limited. I've only managed to get it to work under 15', line of sight. Somfy sell an integrated Z-Wave to RTS (their protocol) bridge for $300. I'd LOVE to see Smarthome bring a similar Insteon unit to market.

Linked right up to one of the buttons on my Keypad dimmer switch so I don't need the remote to operate the Sunsetter awning. I also have it linked to my HA system, mostly to retract the awning in case I forget, but also it can open it (or not) based on conditions (sun, rain, wind speed and direction) Works well.

Device lacks a way to stop a drape or shade part way! Or am I wrong, I hope.

Returned once due to defective solder joint. Enclosure larger than necessary. Documentation needs improvement. Not up to Smarthome standards. Works well.

I am giving it three stars because it does work, and works reliably. However, I am taking off one star due to the size of the box. They could reduce it by a fifth and still have plenty of room. It is just far too large. I am taking off another star because the battery lasts between 1-2 months. What's up with that? Why do they not power it off of the I/O linc? Direct power is there. I have rewired mine to work off the I/O linc since I was tired of replacing batteries all the time!!!

I am in the middle of a whole home remodel which incorporates 14 motorized blinds using seven of these controllers. My hope is to control the amount of light and heat in the home, thus reducing energy costs. Having already established a Houselinc network in my home, these Somfy controllers are the perfect solution. There are limitations to Somfy controller that I discovered which are worth mentioning. First, the unit currently shipping does not have the wiring in place to allow the I/O linc to power the Somfy controller you must still use the internal battery. Using a soldering iron, this is a simple fix, but I'm pretty sure it voids the warrantee. Second, due to the limitations of the I/O linc, The shades are either opened or closed with nothing in between. A second I/O linc will allow for this function, but in my situation it's not really necessary. And finally, although programming shades through Houselinc is very straight foward, it is necessary to put a delay of roughly 30 seconds between tasks to elimate RF interference between individual controllers. These limitations are minor, and in no way would prevent me from buying, using or recommending this product.
