Halloween Project

Activate Any Prop When Motion is Detected

One of the best ways to keep trick-or-treaters or Halloween party guests on their toes is with the use of motion-based automation. And with a couple of affordable X10 components and wireless motion sensors that you can stick virtually anywhere, setup takes just minutes, with no complicated wiring involved! To get started, you'll need the following:

*ControLinc Maxi required for programming the ApplianceLinc. ControLinc Maxi is not required if you have X10 home automation software or any other X10 transmitter.

You'll also need something to automate when motion is detected. This can be virtually any electronic device you want, including spooky lights, bubble machines, fountains, strobe lights or animated props. Some favorites include:

Setup
  1. Start by setting the X10 address on the Wireless X10 Motion Sensor following the steps in the instruction manual. X10 addresses consist of a "House Code" (represented by the letters A-P) and a "Unit Code" (represented by the numbers 1-16). It doesn't matter which house code you choose, although we recommend avoiding house code "A." That's the default setting, and the one most likely to have phantom signals if a neighbor were to get a similar system.
  2. Mount the Wireless X10 Motion Sensor in the location where you want motion to be detected. This can be done with screws or self-adhesive strips.
  3. Take the X10 16-Device Plug-In RF Base and set its "House Code" to the same letter that you selected for the Wireless X10 Motion Sensor. To change the house code, simply use a small screwdriver to turn the code wheel to the proper house code.
  4. Plug the X10 16-Device Plug-In RF Base into any outlet in the house within 100 feet of the motion sensor.
  5. Plug the INSTEON ApplianceLinc V2 appliance module into the outlet where you plan on plugging in the automated device.
  6. Following the steps outlined in the quick-start guide, set its X10 address to be the same as the Wireless X10 Module.
  7. Plug the device you plan on automating into the outlet on the bottom of the ApplianceLinc, and switch the device into the ON position.

Now when you or anyone else walks by the motion sensor, the device will turn on. The device will turn off approximately 1 minute after it last detected motion!

If you want to automate several devices with the same motion sensor, simply expand with additional ApplianceLincs set to the same House Code and Unit Code. To automate multiple devices from multiple motion sensors, simply order as many as you need. Only one X10 16-Device Plug-In RF Base is needed per house code.
