im looking to doing a home automation system. I do it for commercial level but thats stuff it way to expensive to buy for a house. i was looking into vivint's system aka 2gig home automation kit. But affraid i will be limited to what only they let you do. i want to programs things my way add what i want and build custom graphics. And not digging the monthly price! just needs to find a front end to start with that i can build on. please help!!!
What commercial system do you work with? Vivint and 2GIG are security, not home automation systems. Home automation deal primarily with remote control of lighting, HVAC, appliances, etc. Is that what you want? Or a security system? Each needs to be dealt with separately, but can be integrated.

Well I worked for a independent office and did seimens and KMC for 4 years. Now I'm working for another independent office doing trane and niagara ax systems. The main reason for the home automation is my house got robbed last Friday and I want a home security system to help prevent it from happening again. The kit threw vivint is a 2gig system an allows for a home security system and home automation. You can control lights thermostat garage door front door anything z-wave. My proublem is I think you limited to what z-wave devices you can add. Found a z-wave power meter I thought would be cool to add but not sure if there was a way to display real time kw and calculate monthly kw.
Nearly all home automation systems limit you that particular protocol. An exception is X10, but that's old technology and is often unreliable. It's also limited to 256 possible codes making it easily "pickable." But, that's home automation which needs to be considered apart from home security, keeping possible integration in mind.
Security seems to be your first need, possibly adding home automation later. Elk security products are made for the DIYer and is a popular system among forum posters.
An Elk security system also functions cooperatively with Insteon home automation products.
