I have been interested for a while to utilize the Homelink in our vehicles to be able to control our outdoor landscape lights. With this said, I did some research and ordered some X10 components--a XPS3 switch, RR501 transceiver and wireless wall plate remote (just to use to program the homelink).

Well, I added the switch and it controls the lights no problem. I, for some reason, cannot get the transceiver to control the switch. I have tried running the dryer (to change phases) but to no avail. It just will not activate the lights. Because of this, I searched more and saw that INSTEON uses both PCM and RF. I suspect switching to INSTEON will be easier than sticking with X10 and having to isolate all devices that may cause an interference.

With that said, I am looking for a sentiment that my hypothesis is correct, and also some ideas of the products I should purchase. Thanks!

The easiest approach is to bypass the Homelink gear entirely--install a dual-band Insteon device to control the load, then put a RemoteLinc 2 on a visor clip in the vehicles and you're done.

This is something that I have watched with interest, but don't have a homelink-equipped vehicle yet, so it is only theoretical.

I am under the impression that a homelink system requires a "vehicle interface". This interface transmits X-10 signals over the powerline. Unfortunately, I made a call to homelink a while back, and they seemed clueless about these interfaces.

Try:

Here's a link to the article I used as my guide to accomplish this.
