| I own a condo in a tropical climate. I am looking for a wireless sensor that shuts off the a/c when the door to the outside is open. I know this technology exists but I can't find it! Can anyone help? |

| No, I don't- I just found out about this product/company on Amazon and decided to ask about it. How hard/expensive would it be to set this up? I'd have to carry the parts with me to Mexico. (Thanks for your very quick response!) |

| You might want to shut off the air circulation fan when the door is opened to avoid pulling in hot outside air but to shut down the A/C compressor any time a door is opened will be hard on the compressor motor. The compressor motor may not start immediately after being stopped to allow the pressure to reduce before a start is attempted. Perhaps something that stops the air circulating fan immediately and stops the compressor only if the door is held open for more than 60 seconds. Without already having Insteon to build on it will be an expensive Insteon only approach. X10 would be less expensive but not reliable enough to control a major appliance like A/C in my opinion. |

There are many way to go about this, I would use a control system and a smart thermostat. With something like Homelogic you can sense when the door is open and turn thermostat to "off" if the door is opened. The best part about going with a system like homelogic is you can add cameras, security,etc. and access it from any pc or iphone anywhere in the world so you can keep an eye on your place when you are back in the states.

Will that alleviate the problem of the compressor trying to kick in and out with the door swinging open and closed?
I've seen similar systems in hotels, but the door (or window) needs to held open to affect the system. Anyone know how they do it? |

| I've worked on such a system for a hotel in Barbados. Essentially, there were PIR detector(s) - depending on the room or suite and a bunch of magnetic door switches. A fairly simple logic then decided based on things like "front door opened followed by a PIR detector sensing a person" whether the room was occupied or not. A/C was disabled, no ifs or buts, whenever the balcony door was not closed. Areas with airconditioning units in rooms (some parts of the hotel had air ducts with electrically controlled dampers in the rooms) had compressors set to about 10 minutes rest after it was stopped to prevent cycling. |
