| cat5e or 16AWG monster cable... which one would be better for a home theater system that i am installing in my basement the system consists of a Denon AV2307 reciever and mirage omnisat v2 floor, center channel, and rear speakers as well as a subwoofer. I was thinking the speaker wire not the cat5e. if someone could please enlighten me i would greatly appreciate it. i really am not very knowledgeable in this topic. |

If you want my opinion, the 2307 is a pretty powerful amplifier (100W/ch). I think you want to use a heavier gauge speaker wire. At least 14AWG, if not 12.

I agree. For any movement of electrons from one location to another, bigger is better.
But, for audio especially (IMO) keep in mind the skin effect. Technically, that means attempting to keep the ratio of the exterior to the interior of the conductor (wire) minimal, ideally less than one.
Practically, that means use stranded wire. The more strands the better.
Edit: the skin effect is the tendency for high frequency audio signals to travel on the surface, rather than the core, of a conductor. |
