Hello,
My new smartlinc arrived yesterday to replace the one that bricked. I thought I could maybe us the app to write info to the new smartlinc, which does not work. I got the new smartlinc set up on my network. I added the device in HL which said unrecognized insteon device. I updated HL and the device was recognized as smartlinc. I did the swap device and HL said the devices were not compatible, but I went ahead.
However, it looks like the swap is hung up part of the way thru. The task bar does not show anything, but when I create a new task such as update status for another device, it looks like HL is stuck on the same task. My communications are good, I even ran a new diagnostic. I still have a device in HL that is not connected (I just replaced a single band with a dual band, now 6 dual bands total). I am going to set up a desk top box to connect switches and will remove the device from HL. When I look at the new SL in HL it does appear that all of the responder links are there.
When I log into SL via IP there is only one room, "room" displayed, which is the default. However, if I select show room 3, then it is displayed in the home screen and when selected I can see all of the devices that are in that room. I can add the name of room 3, "Great Room". However, I cannot control any of the devices via SL. None of the devices show their status, even though the status ID is displayed. The great room label then disappears and the room 3 check box for show room becomes unchecked. When I tried the app I get similar behavior. The app was able to write a room name to SL, but then it disappears. When I create room names via the IP and then start the app, none of the room names show up in the app and then they disappear from SL.
So, my questions are.
Is the new SL bad?
Should I reset the new SL and re-try the swap?
Why does HL say the two SLs are not compatible?
Is there a way to get HL to show the current task list?
THanks,
E

You should *not* perform a factory reset on the SmartLinc.

HouseLinc will check in regularly with SmartLabs to see if there are any updates. I do recommend you make sure you've allowed the latest update to install before changing to new hardware. Improvements made to new hardware can create incompatibilities with earlier releases of HouseLinc software.

I don't know why you received the 'not compatible' message. You may want to contact Smarthome's INSTEON support line to report that problem so they can take a look at it.

As someone explained in your previous thread, the device swap allows HouseLinc to restore the SmartLinc's link table. HouseLinc does not program the SmartLinc's web interface, so you would need to recreate the rooms and name the scenes using the SmartLinc's web interface yourself.

In order for the swap to succeed, HouseLinc needs to a) create the same device links in the new SmartLinc as were in the original SmartLinc, then b) edit the links in the responder devices to change them to the new controller's ID. I suspect you'll need to synchronize the house to accomplish that second step. Devices won't report their status until that is complete.

HouseLinc shows the number of pending tasks and the one it is currently working on in the lower left edge of the window, but I haven't yet found any file that lists the remaining tasks.

I would start to synchronize the house, then leave it alone for a couple of hours to complete the task. Once that has completed, you can recreate the rooms and scene names. In the meantime, grab a nice glass of iced tea and enjoy a sunny September weekend!

I removed the new smartlinc, and will allow HL to finish synchronizing. I'll then try the new SL via swap again. I did program the Smartlinc via the web interface, but the room names that I added kept disappearing. Maybe I just need to wait until it is finished before doing that.

You should not be trying to edit the SmartLinc web interface while HouseLinc is trying to edit its link table.

Removing the new SmartLinc while a swap was in progress was a very bad idea, since you've now told HL to erase links to *both* SmartLincs in all your responder devices. I expect that will prevent you from doing any sort of swap now, you'll likely have to start from scratch.

Please wait until HL is completely finished before doing anything else.

TFitz,
Fortunately for me I was smart enough to uncheck the box, delete links from the original smartlinc, when I did the swap. So not problem there. It appeared that the swap was completed since the task bar did not show any activity which is why I tried programming the SL in the first place. Since the SL room name programming is independent of HL it should not make a difference if I change a room name in SL while HL is swapping. This is why I think the device may have a problem.

I see. What happens if you make the changes now, now that HouseLinc is done with it? If the changes don't persist, you may also want to discount the possibility that your browser is showing cached versions of the SmartLinc pages. Can you log in and try it using another browser or computer?

HL is on task 10 of 27, going slowly. I'll wait and see what happens. Smartlinc exhibited the same behavior from 2 different computers. I'll repost once the swap is completed.
Thanks,
E

OK. So HL finished the swap even though I got the warning again that my two smarlincs were not very compatible. The brick is less than two years old. In the web interface for the new SL none of my rooms are there. I can check the box to show any of my rooms and the devices and scenes are there. Example, if I click the box next to room 7, all of master bedroom devices are there. I just need to rename the room. A little reprogramming is ok so things look good.
If I use the app, it is pulling the info from SL including the rooms names I have entered with their corresponding devices and scenes. Still looks good.
However, when I pull up the web interface for SL, it does not show the device status for any device. I cannot control any device in the room view of if I click on the device (scene) to get to the programming page. I also cannot control anything via the App. Suffice to say very frustrating. I think this device is not working correctly. Not sure what else to do to trouble shoot this.
E

Edit: the app does show device statuses.

That's the expected result--as was mentioned earlier and in the other thread, HouseLinc can change the link tables but it doesn't get involved in other SmartLinc settings. That means that to swap devices, you have to recreate the room names, scene names, status device fields and timers.

In order to get device status, you need to add the status device ID in each scene and you need to ensure the responder device is now linked to the new SmartLinc as a responder device. Did you again synchronize the whole house after re-adding the new SmartLinc and performing a new device swap?

Let's see if the new unit is working, that's easy enough. When HouseLinc isn't busy writing to devices, log into the SmartLinc. Create a new scene. Click Add. Turn on and hold the set button on a nearby device until it blinks. Now use the SmartLinc to turn it on and off. Does it work? Does the status change?

TFitz,
The device status IDs did copy over as did all of the scene names and timers. Just not the room names. So if the kitchen lights scene shows up in Smartlinc, which it does after the swap, then I should be able to control this.
Why does the web interface does not show the device/scene status, while the app does.
I'll try synchronizing the house to see if that helps. Smartlinc 2 (the new one) does show as a controller of the kitchen lights under links in HL. S0 this behavior is not as expected. A scene, kitchen lights, was written to the new smartlinc but smartlinc cannot control it.
We have two young children so I am hoping the house synchro works so I can stop spending time on this.
Thanks,
E

I see the confusion. When you use one of the Insteon apps on a mobile device instead of actually logging in with a browser, you are seeing the cached data stored in the app instead of the room and scene names actually stored in the SmartLinc.

Don't let this get in the way of spending a Saturday with your family. Tell HouseLinc to synchronize the house and let it be--you don't need to supervise, it'll handle it on its own. You can check in on it later, after they've gone to bed!

No matter how many devices are in the scene, only one is reported to SL. The status reported (or not) is the device ID entered in the Status Device ID when you click on the scene name in SL.

Did that ID swap?

Stu,
yes it appears that the device ID did swap. The problem is the inability to control a device/scene thru the smartlinc web interface or via the app. We'll see after the synchro, which may be finished.

Yes, the house synchro worked. I'll just need to finish adding my rooms and do a new custom program for an X10 switch. In HL I did type in actual scene/device names to replace the generic "room, scene" name which makes it much easier to identify the scene. These did not carry over. Fortunately, by not deleting the old SL I can use it to redo the naming. Then I'll remove the device from HL. Thanks for the help with this. Hopefully there will be a SL with back-up capacity or a feature in the app that allows you to copy settings and links to a new smartlinc. If your SL stops working and you do not have HL, then you are SOL.

If you have to replace your Smartlinc and have Houselinc:
1. Add SL to your network. I used the same ip, configured in my router so existing favorites, links, etc still worked.
2. Add SL to HL. Make sure you are running the latest version of HL.
3. Click on the old SL in HL and select swap. Go thru the wizard and select the new smartlinc. In the pop up for links that will be copied there is a box at the bottom of the list to delete links from the old smartlinc. I would uncheck that box.
4. Allow the swap to finish and don't mess with the smartlinc while this is in process.
5. Synchronize your house.
6. Go into the new smartlinc web interface and re-add your rooms. Unless you have a record, there is no way to know which of the 15 rooms are which except by adding each room one at a time and seeing which devices and scenes are in it. Or you can go to SL in HL and select links. In the field with "room, scene" you can select room 1, scene 1 and then use the down arrow to scroll down and see what links are there for each "room, scene" which should help. Or if you typed in actual names for "romm, scene" in the old SL, then you can still look at that device in HL and easily determine which room is which.
7. Delete the old SL from HL. I have not done this yet, but after I do I will run a half-link diagnostic to make sure there are no links remaining to the old smartlinc.
