I installed a Morning Industry deadbolt and it works fine. It also linked as it should to the 2458A1 Morninglinc unit, which is located in an unswitched wall outlet located 3 feet from the deadbolt. Tapping the set button on the Morninglinc opens and closes the deadbolt as it should.

But the instructions for linking the Morninglinc to a controller have me stumped. In my case I have a Smartlinc connected to my router and I have used it to successfully control other Insteon devices using my iPhone and iPad. Those other devices were readily recognized and registered without any difficulties.

In the case of the Morninglinc, I have followed (I think!) the directions as follows:

1) Tap MorningLinc’s Set button to put your lock into the desired state (the action you would like the lock
to perform when you tap the On button).
2) Set the controller to linking mode. (For most controllers, press and hold the Set button for 3 seconds
an On/scene button for 10 seconds.)
You will have 4 minutes to complete the next step before linking mode automatically times out.
3) Press and hold MorningLinc’s Set button for 3 seconds.
The MorningLinc Status LED will flash once and then turn on solid if the door is locked or turn off
if the door is unlocked.

It's step 3 that is the problem. Instead of a single flash I always get the same pattern: 4 shorts flashes followed by 3 long ones followed by the LED in steady "on" mode. There is no evidence that the Morninglinc has registered, and the "on" command once the scene is saved does not activate the deadbolt.

Can anyone suggest what I am doing wrong, or a workaround? Many thanks

Don't use the SmartLinc Set button in step 2. Use the appropriate SmartLinc scene Add button instead.

Sorry I should have noted that I did not press the set button on the Smartlinc, as I have seen that described as a source of trouble on other posts.

I simply selected "Add Device/Scene" from the iPhone Insteon app and selected Linking -> Add. At that point the app says I should "hold the device set button until double-beep".

I have yet to hear any beep at all from the Morninglinc, only the flashing LED, and it doesn't flash in anything like the pattern it's supposed to.

Within the 4 minute limit set by the iPhone app to complete linking process I tried to hold in the Morninglinc set button for 3 seconds (+) but all I get are 4 quick blinks and 3 long blinks every time. I have tried varying the 3 second press up and down with no change in result.

The MorningLinc might not like the extra steps used by the app. Try logging into the SmartLinc's own web page and adding it there instead.

I tried that too. smartlinc.smarthome.com brings up the interface program and correctly finds the IP address of the Smartlinc. But creating a scene, naming it, then selecting "Scene Devices --> Add" The response is "Press and Hold Button on Device. Waiting....." I then try pressing and holding the set button on the Morninglinc and have the same 4 quick flashes and 3 long ones I've described.

I should repeat that a different Insteon device was successfully added and apppears in all the controllers and functions just fine. The problem is only with the Morninglinc it seems.

I really did try everything I could think of before posting this problem :) I think I've exhausted the likely suspects. But thanks for your ongoing advice.

Do you have another Insteon device (or spare button on a KeypadLinc) that you can link to the Morningstar as a test?

I don't want to jump this thread but I'm having the same exact problem. Was there a resolution?

I don't know if this was their problem, or yours, but sometimes insteon devices (such as a smartlinc and morninlinc) can fail to communicate with each other. There are a variety of reasons for this, but they are generally due to being on opposite legs of a house electrical system or some time of signal interference or attenuation.

One way that can be used to verify this possibility is to temporarily move your morninglinc to the same outlet as the smartlinc, and try the process again. If this works, this tends to suggest that something is making it difficult for insteon signals to reach between the smartlinc and morninglinc.

BTW...I found my morninglinc to be very sensitive to this problem. It took a couple of attempts to successfuly link to my ISY-99.

I appreciate the suggestion oberkc. I will try this. I had not pursued a solution to this query because the summer arrived and my attention was distracted elsewhere. I must get back to it, and I'll let you know if this approach points to a cause for the problem.

I'm having the same problem: 4 fast blinks followed by 3 slow blinks when I press the set button. This is when I try either with my SmartLinc (using the Add button in the web interface) or when Adding via Indigo 6 w/USB Stick 2448A7.

I have tried the factory reset procedure, and I get the same pattern of blinks. It does not reset, as it can still control the lock; but I can't connect to the Morning Linc.

I'm trying to fix things because my system was trying to lock the door at 10pm; right when my outside lights were supposed to go-off. There was some weird cross linking?

The link information between the lockset and the MorningLinc is maintained in the lockset, not the MorningLinc. Factory resetting the MorningLinc does not remove the information from the lockset. The MorningLinc Set button will continue to operate the lockset unless the lockset is reset. There is no need to do that.

The MorningLinc, more so than any other Insteon device, is very security oriented. Be sure the MorningLinc is near enough to the SmartLinc to be heard when the MorningLinc Set button is pressed. The MorningLinc needs a specific linking sequence. An application cannot just write link records in PLM and the MorningLinc as would be done with other Insteon devices. The security features of the MorningLinc will not allow it.

Thanks LeeG for your post, but if you go back to my original post of July 18/12, you'll see that there was never a problem getting the MorningLinc to connect to the deadbolt (the two units are 3 feet from each other). Pressing the button on the MorningLinc causes the deadbolt to open and close as it should.
The problem which I and several others have reported here is that the MorningLinc will not connect to the SmartLinc unit, and thus allow remote activation of the MorningLinc unit, rather than manually pressing the button.
I have rigorously followed the linking procedure, but I get the same result that posters tshort and ztutz report - instead of a single flash I always get the same pattern: 4 shorts flashes followed by 3 long ones followed by the LED in steady "on" mode. There is no evidence that the Morninglinc has registered, and the "on" command once the scene is saved does not activate the deadbolt.
If you have any suggested solution to this, we'd be grateful.

My comment about Factory reset not resetting the lockset to MorningLinc link was in response to

"It does not reset, as it can still control the lock;"

Because the lockset to MorningLinc link information (not an Insteon link) is maintained in the lockset itself, not the MorningLinc, a Factory reset of the MorningLinc does not reset the ability of the MorningLinc to continue to control the lockset with the MorningLinc Set button. There is no reason to think the MorningLinc factory reset did not work because the lockset can still be controlled.

Once the lockset to MorningLinc link (not an Insteon link) has been established the 3 foot rule no longer applies. Position the MorningLinc in an outlet that has reliable communication with the SmartLinc. It sounds like the MorningLinc plug point is not able to communicate with the SmartLinc plug point at the MorningLincs current location.
