I have an extensive X10 installation in my home, mostly SR227 recepticals. Also have a lot of InsteOn ToggleLinc wall switches/dimmers 2466D. I've been adding more of the InsteOn products and phasing more to InsteOn as I like the dual band and repeater capability. I've been using ActiveHome Pro for many years as I can program the module and not have to leave the computer on. ActiveHome will only control X10 and now I have a large mix of protocals.
I am now running a static IP and iis 7.5 with remote access and a computer that is up 24/7. I upgraded to mControl v3 so I can control the X10 and InsteOn. Bad news is documentation for mControl v3 is limited or does not exist. Support is limited or does not exist. The mControl forum (Embedded Automation) is very limited and after several days have never received a response to any questions. I have had great service with SmartHome. Hoping I can get answers here.
mControl is connected to a PowerLinc Modum interface 2413U and I was finally able to hack my way through the IP settings, ports, coms, etc to get things working. Started pulling the covers of the wall switches to record InsteOn address and discovered about half of them are missing the address label. These were installed years ago.
How can I determine the address of the ToggleLinc switches without the label?
I have not been sucessful in getting the correct settings configured for the software/interface to link with the X10 devices. Any recomendations?

DIYguy - I was an mControl user for several years and got so frustrated with the v3 release, its bugs, and lack of documentation and support that I gave up on it back in December. I also had a 2413U that worked great with Insteon, but would not work at all with my older X10 devices (which was isolated to an mControl problem). So I decided to give HouseLinc a try and it has worked flawlessly ever since. Plus SmartHome graciously "exchanged" my 2413U for the required 2413UH to run HouseLinc (the combo package is $99 so it actually only cost me $20 after the $79.99 refund).
With that, I believe HousLinc was able to poll all the devices in my network and establish the initial database and allowed me to set all the links without having to move from switch to switch. It also has a great signal analysis tool.
Perhaps Stu can validate the polling - I honestly don't remember if I had to manually enter every switch's address or not.
Good luck! |

tlitchfo, you're correct. Existing Insteon devices and links are polled when HouseLinc is installed. There is no need to enter each device's ID. Manual links that occur after the installation can be found by synchronizing.
Added (and existing) devices can also be detected by their ID or pressing their set button. |

Did some experimenting and found a way to find the missing address on at least one of the 2466d switches. One less issue hopfully.
When comparing programs, mainly HouseLinc and mControl all the features for mControl sounded like what I was looking for, screen shots look usable. Since I have a static IP and Win7 running iis 7.5 24/7 I was relly interested in the ability to log in remote plus wife and I have iPhones so the phone app was pretty attractive. I have not seen those options available with HouseLinc. Dose HouseLinc do this and am I missing this somewhere?
I'm definately not a newbie at this but I have over ten hours into getting mControl installed, configured and to turn five InsteOn lights on and off. Still haven't had the x10's respond. Wow..... |
