Hi- I have an old pull chain ceiling fixture in my kitchen. Does anyone know if I can replace it with a new fixture using a Smarthome In-LineLinc Dimmer - INSTEON Remote Control In-Line Dimmer so I don't have to have an electrician add a wall switch?

Thank you all for your responses. I think I may have explained it incorrectly. I want to replace the pull chain fixture and install a more modern light fixture there. I don't need it to be a dimmer- I just haven't been able to find anyway to install a new fixture without having an electrician open the walls and install a wall switch.
I was looking for a product that would be installed in the ceiling that could be operated remotely so that a wall switch would not be needed.
From what I read I thought this product could do that but I am no electrician :) |

A single paddle Remotlinc 2 and Wall bracket will allow you to place a wall switch anywhere desired.
The pull-chain fixture is not a dimmer, so the ILL relay would be the equivalent. If you really want dimming, then follow Tfitzpatri8's advice and remove a SwitchLinc dimmer faceplate. You may also need to remove the mounting screw tabs to fit it into the ceiling box. |

Presently you can pull the faceplate off and use a SwitchLinc in place of an InLineLinc Dimmer. If you wait just a little bit, I suspect we'll see a new version of the ILL dimmer for sale under a different model number that incorporates the same features found in other new Insteon products. |

Another alternative would be to purchase a dual band outlet link and place it up there. You would need to put a plug on the existing fixture to allow you to plug it into the outlet though. http://www.smarthome.com/2472DWH/OutletLinc-Dimmer-INSTEON-Remote-Control-Outlet-Dual-Band-White/p.aspx

Not very elegant, so another alternative would be of course to hire an electrician and have him wire in a new switch. I would opt to purchase this dual band dimmer: http://www.smarthome.com/2477D/SwitchLinc-INSTEON-Remote-Control-Dimmer-Dual-Band-White/p.aspx
Please keep in mind these newer style dual band devices require deeper junction box's. So if your home is older than please do order the none dual band model dimmer as they are indeed slimmer in profile.

Hello Debbie Stein,
If you intend to keep your existing pull chain fixture and add a In line linc dimmer (ILL). This product is no longer being sold, as it is no longer listed in the SH web site. You would have only the relay style on/off, or the dual band relay on/off models to choose from.
