I have had X10 stuff for years, my remotes stopped working so trying to gradually upgrade to insteon/smartlinc. Got a Controller (#2412N, rev 2.0+) and 1 insteon switch, but gonna try to control the x10 stuff first. Wired it up and plugged it in, got to the Smartlinc found screen showing the ip address. When I click on that I get a 404 not found error (then it rolls out to a Yahoo search results page). I've tried this probably 20 times, and I have reset the unit by holding the button for five seconds then tapping the button five times. I've tried unpluggin and replugging the controller unit. I get the same error on desktop with xp, laptop with Windows 7 or chrome, android browser, and insteon app says user name is already taken (even with trying 10 random digits in username). Had a Westell 327W dsl modem/router combo from old Verizon, suspected that so switched to Frontier's new unit (Netgear model 7550) but still have same problem. This is my first attempt at logging in/configuring the controller, I have never gotten any further than getting the http://<ipaddress>:80. Smartlinc help tells me to call Frontier, Frontier tells me to call Smartlinc, you know the drill. Any suggestions?

Jim,

The intent is to remove any possible barriers while SL is being worked on. You don't need to be worrying about XYZ giving you more headaches while this trouble shooting process is under way.

Cell phone chargers, computers, baby monitors, UPS, TV, XBox, etc are all known to cause problems. You can plug the different devices back in one at a time after you have internal / external connectivity to the SL.

So a circuit might power a whole room of outlets - kind of unrealistic to think one would have only a smartlinc on the whole circuit? I did not get a filter with it, just the controller, a cable and a quick start guide. I'll try different wall plugs with my long cable if I even still have it.
stusviews Posted - 06/15/2012 : 1:19:57 PM
All that stuff on the powerstrip can cause Insteon communication issues. If the power strip is a surge protector, it can cause difficulty itself. Use the filter that came with the SmartLinc to isolate the powerstrip and anything plugged into it.

A circuit is everything and anything powered by the same circuit breaker. Each circuit breaker represents one circuit.

You do not need to register at smarthome.smartlinc.com to access the SmartLinc from your LAN (at home).

How about 2 tivos, a slingbox, an xbox, a ps3 and 2nd smartphones? Sounds like they should be disconnect/off (wireless) too? Also, I only have one wall plug (two outlets) within reach of the modem. I have the smartlinc plugged directly in to the wall in one outlet, and a power strip in the other outlet running the modem, computer,tv, wireless headphones charger, slingbox, tivo, dvd, stereo, desk phone, light, calculator and some cable tv signal converters. How are you defining circuit? Only practical alternative would be to run a long cable through the floor and crawl space from the modem to the smartlinc.

Thanks for your patience, I was pretty tired and cranky last night. I will try this when I have a chance.

Hello Jim,

For the sake of clarity I would kindly ask you to do the following. Please unplug all the computers in the home. If you have any laptops in place, please ensure they are turned off and unplugged. I would like you to have only one computer operating during this process.

You will go into your router and go to the DHCP listings. This will tell you what device(s) ( computers ) are on your network. In this case there should be only one computer, which is the one you're connected to. If that is the case, good.

** Keep in mind you may have to refresh the list to populate correctly. In the worst case scenario just look at the list and count how many devices are listed. If there is 5, then record their IP address. When you plug in the SL and go back you will see a 6th device, which of course will have a new IP adress assigned. This is the IP address to the SL. ***

From there, I want you to perform a hard reset of the SmartLinc (SL) this will ensure it is at factory settings and ready to accept the DHCP address from your router. Once you complete the hard reset of the SL. I want you to plug in the SL. You will then go back to your routers DHCP list. You should see a new device on your network.

This address that is assigned will be for the SL. Write it down and it should start with 192.168.x.x Once you have this number open a web browser of your choice. Enter this IP address into your address bar. The SL should appear in the browser.

If you can access the SL *Locally* over the LAN. You're half way there my friend. Now there are several links at the bottom of the page with a *wrench* icons at the center and at the bottom of the page. Go through all the icons and make the appropriate changes such as time, location, DST. You will also see the *Change Network Settings* in this page you will have the ability to make all the network changes to the SL. For now just leave them as they are. You will note that the edit port is at the bottom of this page.

You will want to change this port in the SL to 8008. Once you have done so the device will tell you to power cycle the device. This mean you will unplug it from the wall, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in to the receptacle.

Please ensure this SL is plugged into the wall directly and no UPS / surge protectors are on this circuit as it will affect you from accessing the SL reliably. You will then go into your router and enter the IP address that was listed for the SL in the port forwarding tab. There will box where you can enter the last digits into the field. There will also be a box to enter the port 8008 to. You will also have a box or should have to enable port forwarding for this line. Once you have done this hit save.

You will again go to your web browser and enter the SL IP address into the browser. What is different now is that you will enter the port number at the end of the address.

ie. 192.168.X.X:8008 <--- This is what it looks like. The X is just my example that I don't know what your router will assign so it could be anything. But you get the point. Once you have confirmed this basic step has been completed we can move forward.

Hang in there my friend you're almost there.

Jim's To Do List:

1. Unplug all computers in the house. Only have one hard wired computer active during this process.

2. Ensure no UPS / Surge protector is on the same circuit as the computer and the SmartLinc (SL) at anytime.

3. Login to the router: Determine all of the IP address on the network. Record them and know how many are listed. When you plug in the SL there should be a new device detected and a new IP address assigned to the SL.

This is the IP address you will enter into the web browser for local access. It will or should start with 192.168..X.X

Write it down . . .

4. You would have completed the factory hard reset of the SL prior. So all you need to do is plug it into the wall. Your router should be set to DHCP and if so it will hand out a new IP address to your SL.

5. Enter this IP address into your web browser. You should be able to access the SL web page now. If you can not let me know what specific problem is coming up etc.

If you're able to access the SL . . . Awesome, please make the appropriate changes listed way above.

6. We will do the registration portion later, also note please do not add any authentication at this time OK.

Glad it's making sense to you because I am more confused than ever. When you say I need to have the SL registered, are you referring to registering it online at a website? Or are you talking about the steps in the user manual after 'Installing Smartlinc'? I've got it wired up and the modem and smartlin's ethernet leds are green. What exactly do I do next? The manual next shows the insteon app, and when I try this (and I have watched the video on this) I get to to the new user login, put in a username and password (I'm forced to use a password, can't leave it blank or the submit button is inactive). Then it says smartlinc found, shows the insteon ID, a different ID than is on the back of the unit!. When I click add it says the username is taken no matter what I put.

OK, so forget the app for now, the next section of the manual says to use the Smartlinc Web Interface if you don't have the app. This is where I go to the url and get the I'm at home/I'm not at home/New user registration options. Is this where, as you say, I need to register the SL? Clicking new user registration gives me the user and device registration screen. I put a username, am required to use a password again, put in the insteon ID from the back of the unit, click submit and I get "The webpage cannot be found" (HTTP 404 not found in the tab). I feel like you're asking me to register the unit before I do this new user registration step, that doesn't make sense to me.

The next section of the manual goes into port forwarding, authentication, am I supposed to do this before the above registration?

My modem's firewall is set to "Security: none." I think I set up port forwarding on 8008 connected to the smartlinc, but don't see anywhere to "choose an IP address" for it so I may not have completed this right.

How can I change the port on the SL when I can't even get into it's settings yet?

Thanks for your patience with me, I'm getting quite frustrated.

Jim,

This is making a lot more sense now. You absolutely need to have the SL registered. Please follow all of the required steps to allow local and remote access to your (SL) Smartlinc. Please ensure you complete the port forwarding steps in your router. Also ensure any and all fire wall settings in the router / computer allow the port you're going to use.

Please hard reset the SL again. Once that is done follow all of the steps in the set up guide. The only thing I would ask you to do is to leave the password portion blank. You can do this later, all I am concerned with is getting the unit up and running first.

Please also ensure you change the port on the SL and on the port forward on the router to 8008 for now. Let us know if you get stuck at any point.

I did not register my smartlinc. The instructions do not ever say to do that. When you say in the smartlinc web page you mean at http://smartlinc.smarthome.com - right? I did try clicking that third link "New User Registration" and I forget previously why but it was unsuccessful. I just tried it again. I have to first click on "I'm at home" to get my insteon ID, then I go back, go to new user registration, enter a user name and password (twice), put in my insteon ID and, guess what? HTTP 404 Not Found, https://smartlinc.smarthome.com/reguser.asp shows on the browser tab, The webpage cannot be found etc. in the body of the display, the usual screen like the net is down. Tried a reboot just in case and same result. I tried registering on the android app too but always get a 'user name alreday taken' message even after using a name with 8 random digits in it. Am I trying to register in the wrong place?
EVIL Teken Posted - 06/13/2012 : 4:18:42 PM
Jim,

Please confirm that you did in fact register your SmartLinc? This is the third link at the bottom of the SmartLinc web page.

Only that your router shows that the SmartLinc is at the specified address (Did you verify this with the MAC address? That's critical.), that you can ping that address successfully, and that you receive the 404 message when you enter that specific address into your browser.
JimCollins Posted - 06/13/2012 : 1:04:50 PM
I have called them twice and they tell me to call Frontier (my ISP) who told me twice to call smartlinc. Anything new I can tell them? You think I have a bad unit?
stusviews Posted - 06/13/2012 : 12:56:36 PM
This all suggests that the SmartLinc is on your LAN and that the Read Only Memory has been corrupted.

It's time to call Gold Line support.

I had tried that before. Just tried again, here's what I get:

That's it. Whew, wish I could cut and paste that! Let me know if you think I made any typos there. By the way the modem shows the IP address of the controller as 192.168.254.47. Thanks for interpreting all this for me, it's way over my head!

Something's amiss. The response should be Pinging smartlinc [your private network address assigned to the SmartLinc] with 32 bytes of data: where your private network address assigned to the SmartLinc is, most commonly, 192.169.0 or 1.and a number between 2 ans 255.

It should NOT be suffixed with .netgear.com. Also, 8.15.7.110 appears to be a WAN (your IP) and not a LAN (your local network) address or some other strange address which will result in a 404 (not found) address.

What is the result of entering IPCONFIG at the command prompt?

Here's some more info, I am now getting "Error
Sorry, cannot find a SmartLinc on your network (public IP address). Please resend your SmartLinc's configuration and try again" when I click on the 'I am at home' link. I have seen this intermittently but more often I do see the IP and not that error. I am currently getting this error while in another tab I can simultaneously see the smartlinc controller's IP in my modem's 'my connected home' window, so it seems the modem can see the controller but I just can't get there.

Open a Command Prompt (Start, All Programs, Accessories). At the prompt type >ping smartlinc and press enter.

What is the result?

Are you sure the smartlinc is on port 80? When I set mine up I inadvertently picked port 2500 ( or whatever was the default port)
JimCollins Posted - 06/11/2012 : 3:04:18 PM
It takes me to a Frontier web search results page (http://service1.searchguide.frontier.com/search?qo=smartlinc&rn=PkZaZ26Oy8kZyPS)

What happens when you enter http://smartlinc in you browser?
