Ok so this is a dumb question and I'm pretty sure I know the answer.
But to control everything in my house I have to purchase the Central Controller.. which isn't a bad price at all and THEN separate receptacles and switches ? That could get very pricey. Sorry for the dumb question, but was just wondering because I am very interested in setting this up

Yes Some tweaks may or may not be needed, but we're here to help as is the Insteon Gold Line.

It'll be fun

Ohhhhh I see now, that package includes that "Smartlinc" you were saying.
And that just connects to my wireless router and what not. THEN i just install those switches
AND/OR receptacles if I choose to buy seprately and then I can connect that all through "Insteon" app that I downloaded for free on my iphone?

I'm sorry if I seem like a complete retard, but it still isn't exactly clear to me. You said "to control lighting it requires a Smartlinc."

Smartlinc what? what is that, What do you mean by that.
And ok I understand I need to replace my standard switches with Insteon switch or whatever correct?
So why don't I need the Central Controller?
I am currently looking at this package http://www.smarthome.com/2490C2/SmartLinc-INSTEON-Light-Control-Kit/p.aspx
That there would give me everything I need right? Couple switches, then i can just buy some receptacles seperately?

To control lighting from an iPhone requires a SmartLinc, the free app, and an Insteon device that is connected to the light. If the light is currently controlled by a standard switch, then the switch needs to be replaced with a SwitchLinc. If the light is a lamp, then it can be plugged into a wire-in OutletLinc or a plug-in LampLinc.

There are several Apple apps available to control a TV.

ahhh Now i'm even more confused. I downloaded the iphone app, so what do i need to control say just my living room lights and tv?
stusviews Posted - 05/13/2012 : 6:51:43 PM
Nope.

The app will give your iOS device access to the SmartLinc. A Central Controller is not required to get started with home automation.

Ok thought so, So if i just buy a few Insteon receptacles and switches I will be able to control thos with my Iphone using the app? I don't actually need tho Central Controller?
Thanks for the reply !

The SmartLinc will allow you to control all Insteon responders from any device that can access a LAN (your home network) or WAN (the internet). HouseLinc will allow control from a PC. A KeypadLinc can control 5 or 8 devices. The RemoteLinc can control 6, the RemoteLinc 2 can control 4 or 8.

So, yes. If you want to control something like a switch or receptacle, it must be a controllable device, such as a SwitchLinc or OutletLinc or LampLinc, etc.. You can start by setting up just one or two rooms. A Central Controller is not required.
