  • What's Included
  • The Dakota Alert DCPA-2500 Wireless Driveway Probe Alert is a driveway alarm kit that detects vehicles as they enter a driveway. The transmitter operates on one 9-Volt Battery (not included) and has 50 feet of direct burial wire connecting the probe to the exterior case. The probe is buried parallel to the driveway, and will detect vehicles passing by within approximately 10-12 feet. The direct burial cable can be run to a tree or post nearby, where the transmitter box is located. When a vehicle drives by, the transmitter will send a signal to the DCR-2500 receiver up to 1/2 a mile away. The receiver has four form "C" relay outputs and one 12VDC output. The output durations are adjustable up to 10 minutes and the receiver will play one of four different tunes that are selected at the transmitter so that different zones can be distinguished. The receiver is powered by a 12VDC transformer and also offers a 5 minute exit delay so you can leave the house without disturbing any occupants as well as a reminder beep and counter function. Add up to 3 Extra Transmitters to your Wireless Driveway Probe Alert.

The DCPA-2500 is ideal in locations where there may be deer or other large animals that would cause false signals with a motion detecting system. Also, because the probe is buried underground it non obtrusive and aesthetically pleasing. The transmitter is weatherproof and meant for exterior locations.

I wouldn't want this unit if I lived where there are a lot of thunderstorms. The false signals from lightning would get to be annoying.

I've been using two of these (two sensors, 1 receiver) for about 5 years now. One is about 200' down house driveway. The other is about 800' away on barn driveway, and we use it to monitor horse boarders coming and going. System works very well, as long as batteries in good shape. I replace them about once a year. When batteries get tired, monitor can start to go off repeatedly. Close lightning will also set off monitor.

I bought this thinking I could wire it into my Insteon system. I thought -- it is the next generation after they phased out the 3000 series it should work. Someone at Dakota thought it was a good idea to change the transmission frequency -- thus rendering it not compatible with any of the sensors on the market for connecting it to home automation systems. If you are looking to connect this to an Insteon system --- pass on this one unless you want a stand alone system with an alert.

Battery contacts over time become loose. I placed a sponge inside to hold the batteries inplace, but I still had problems. I then tried to gently bend the battery contact and it broke off. Had to juryrig the contact and another contact. System still has issues. I do like the system, but the manufacturer needs to redesign the battery contacts. I do know what I'm talking about, I am a licensed electrician!

Fast service, easy to install, and works just has I'd hoped.

I've only had the unit installed for a day. The installation was very easy, and the probe and receiver(s) come from the factory preset to work together. Everything is customizable, if you want, but is a very easy to install "plug and play" unit out of the box. After reading several reviews online I paid extra for quality, and I hope my pleasure with the unit continues as time goes on.

I am thrilled with this product! It was recommended to me by my friend who has this model. It is just what we needed to "alert" us when "vehicles" are coming down our driveway. I am specifying vehicles because we have a large deer population in our area. Thankfully, it isn't chiming for the deer. Installation was not complicated so it didn't take long to have it in and working. A big "Thanks!" to the SMART people who invented this system.

A good system so far. After adjusting the placement it registers every vehicle that comes up the drive. Occasionally there is a false alert but overall a good product.

The alert is working as advertised.
The probe is installed 300' and over a slight rise from our house, with some trees between, so the range is not a problem. I am happy with it. It required about 20 minutes to install, and that included digging a small trench to bury the probe and wire. If I could change one thing, I might alter the alert signal. It sounds like a cheesy electronic doorbell from the 1980s. In this day of limitless choices for ringtones on our cell phones, you would think the manufacturer could come up with a better signal. Still, I give it five stars.
