Calrads small and innovative HDMI Plus IR over single Cat 5e/6 cable solution is specifically designed to deliver pristine digital signals from all HDTV formats and signal sources from 480p to 1080p. This balun system is a perfect solution for replacing costly standard HDMI cables that are difficult to route thru walls and cabinets. One Cat 5e/6 wire using RJ45 terminations deliver digital & IR signals from the transmitter to the receiver. A small class 2 power supply may be required at the receiver side if power from the HDMI source is not sufficient. Please note that only Cat6 cable delivers 3D signals.
The Calrad HDMI plus IR over single Cat 5e/6 cable is capable of transmitting IR signals over the UTP cables. This balun system is plasma friendly and can control the source from the display. This is accomplished by using a IR Receiver and attaching it at a location around your TV and connecting a IR Flashing Emitter attached to the source. Both the IR Receiver and Emitter are included.
Some distances may vary and are dependent on manufactures individual HDMI specifications. All products should be fully tested prior to committing to a Cat 5e/6 solution and sealing long runs of cables inside walls, possibly compromising your installation.

We purchased this product for one of our corporate events that needed a HD 1080p signal to go to a 10k Christie projector over 70 feet away. Using a Cat6 cable, the product performed well with no banding, color issues, or drop-outs.
The issues with this item and reason for the low rating came after the event. Small items like this are often held in place temporarily at events using industry standard 'Gaffers Tape', in our case, we predominantly use ProGaff, which is a low tack tape specifically designed not to leave residue or damage items. We use it on units from many other manufacturers Geffen, BlackBox, Cables-To-Go without issues. On this unit however, when the tape was removed after just a few hours at room temperature, it stripped the screen printing from the unit. The black underlying paint was fine, but the overlay screen print obviously is not coated with a sealant, and comes off.
Why is this an issue? In the field when we're placing these units, it's important for the tech to be able to correctly identify the INPUT and OUTPUT module, and exactly what the unit is. Without clear labeling, this makes things hard and slows things down. I would speculate that if the paint separates so easily from Gaffer's tape, it will also be much more likely to erase over time with regular use. I also start to worry about other potential issues with build quality if small things like this have been overlooked.
So that took one star off the review... why only two stars on the review? Before returning the item, I thought I'd give their technical support a call like many electronic products, they have a number in the box to call to encourage not returning the item without calling them first. I explained the issue to tech support and the person I spoke with told me I'll have to check with the owner and call you back I was requesting a replacement top cover for the unit and I would then clear-coat the top myself to avoid future issues.
I received a call back from the tech a few minutes later and was told that this wasn't something they 'covered', at which point I explained that I was only calling them as a courtesy and to help them out by pointing out a potential issue. For me, sending this item back to the retailer it was only 10 days after purchasing is a very simple thing and I get a full refund. What the manufacturer then gets is a 'black mark' in the retailer's database nearly all retailers keep track of the number of sales vs the number of returns. I was simply trying to give Calrad the opportunity to fix this without bringing it to the attention of the retailer. The tech then tells me he'll call back again.
A few minutes later I get the owner of the company calling me back. At first I think; wow, that's good that the owner bothered to get involved... but that quickly turned to disappointment as he was really not interested in hearing the concerns about the issue and was more intent in defending his company.
