While many systems include multiple high end cameras, DVR equipment, and monitors, it is possible to create a simple system of your own by piecing together different products and using some of your own audio video equipment. While DVR systems are fantastic, they are also costly, to save a few dollars, why not use the old VCR you have sitting around to record events.
For setup, simply connect the RCA video cable from each camera to 'Video In' inputs on the back of the modulator and then connect another single RCA cable from the 'Video Out' on the back of the modulator to your TV or monitor, optionally going through a VCR (each requiring additional RCA video cables sold separately).
A setup with 4 cameras, a modulator, some extra RCA video cables and using your existing TV and VCR, can be done for under $600.
