Now you can accurately measure your rainfall without going outside to empty the bucket! You could also use this as a rain sensor to trigger your skylights to close at the firs few drops of rain, or disable your sprinkler system. The rain sensor works by detecting the change in light patterns when water drops on the outside surface of the dome absorb beams of light, rather than being reflected back inside the dome. The sensor is completely sealed, so no insects or leaves can jam up the mechanism and cause it to fail - there are no mechanical parts. The dome shape is naturally self-cleaning, unlike other type of rain gauge that require periodic cleaning of water residue and accumulated debris. Since the sensor works by counting rain drops, it begins registering when the first drop hits, unlike "bucket" rain gauges that need to fill to some level. It is not affected by vibration from high winds, nor by the effect of rain hitting with increased energy from wind. The sensor can also signal a control system when it is dark outside. Install in air conditioning ducts to be alerted if condensation is forming inside the ducts.
