Essential Info
The bar of electronic style and functionality has been raised with the Sony nav-u portable navigation system. Sony has added several features that set the nav-u apart from most competitors. The 4.8" widescreen LCD with 480x272 pixel resolution provides one of largest viewing areas and sharpest pictures on the portable navigation market. Position Plus technology incorporates extra sensors that provide a more reliable and accurate position relative to the map, ensuring that you are going the right way even when driving through tunnels or areas with tall buildings or mountains. The unit utilizes spoken commands, TTS technology, so you can not only view your directions, but hear them. It also has a dual-view mode that shows your position on a conventional map and in a dynamic 3-D view. And with Gesture Commands, you can draw simple pictures on the touch screen to perform simple functions. Additionally you can use the Bluetooth to connect your cell phone for hands free operation making and receiving phone calls, a super sucker dash mount, and a built in real time traffic channel. This clever unit has everything you need to get from point A to point B via video and audio.
Hands-On Research I took this navigation tool with me on a trip from Irvine, California to Laughlin, Nevada. In effort to see how easy it was to use, I gave the nav-u to my girlfriend to setup while I was driving. She pulled the unit out of the box and following the directions, had the navigation screen up in minutes. Using the touch screen, she plugged in our destination address which was immediately recognized and our active location was displayed. Going through some of the advanced features, we were able to change the voice giving directions, hooked up my phone via Bluetooth (which we tested and worked fine), and connected the traffic cable (although after 90 days you have to pay a fee). We also played with several other features like searching for points of interest and adjusting the volume, and storing locations, all of which worked as expected. What we really liked was how accurate the timing and distances of the directions were, how it displays and announces directions at the same time, the display of distance traveled and remaining distance, estimated time of arrival, and the split screen that pops up when you approach a divide in the road (i.e. freeway interchanges) letting you know which lane to be in. The product worked flawlessly. Kyle M. - Smarthome Product Testing
