- Filtering algorithms improve signal performance
Essential Info
The Global Caché GC-IRE IR Extender extends infrared capability by converting IR signals to ASCII serial data, which can then be read from any PC or RS232 serial port. The IR Extender is designed for use with various IR input devices to capture IR commands that can be recorded, played back, and used to initiate actions across a network: An IR device, such as a remote control, can be used as an input device for controlling equipment throughout your home. For instance, by pressing a button on your bedroom remote, you can adjust lighting, set your home's temperature, activate alarms, and lower the shades.

Connect the IR Extender to your PC's RS232 serial port and send commands using Windows Hyper Terminal. The IR Extender's ACT indicator will blink when receiving IR signals to indicate activity. Plug an IR receiver, such as the General IR Receiver or the IR Converter (all sold separately), to the IR Extender's 3.5mm stereo jack, and your PC will be ready to receive IR commands.
The IR Extender contains filtering algorithms to improve performance by removing unwanted IR signals occurring from direct sunlight or fluorescent lighting. Another source of unwanted signals is caused by remote controllers operated from too great a distance, partially blocked by an obstruction, pointed poorly, or in need of fresh batteries. The filtering is not intended to correct a corrupted signal, but to prevent it from being transmitted as serial data. The IR Extender consists of a small IR sensor and a converter for transmitting IR information to RS232 serial devices.
Global Caché's IR Extender is the first to be able to support the full IR frequency spectrum from 30KHz to 500KHz.
