Essential Info

* The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting children's screen time to 1-2 hours of quality programming per day.

"You guys are geniuses, and have definitely taken a huge bite out of the daily stress of parenthood! THANK YOU!" - Ilene, mother of two

BOB is the answer to the endless fight over screen time struggles in today's home. BOB works by controlling power to any electronic device. The device plugs into BOB, within a key-locked compartment. The parent then programs BOB with each child's daily or weekly time limits. Each BOB has up to 6 unique user accounts. Each child can turn on the device using their own access code. Once time is up, BOB automatically shuts off the device. Parents can turn the device on at any time by using the master code and even access a report on how the children are using their allotted time.

Shipping time was ok, not fast but definately not slow. Was satisfied. The only let down was the $26.00 duty I had to pay, I thought electronics were covered under the free-trade agreement and thus exempt or at least minimized.
    JLG -- norfolk, VA   3/13/2012
Worked great .. for awhile. After about 5 weeks of use, the screen has gone completely blank. I can not reset any passwords, give or take away fly-time or see how much time is remaining, though codes are still working and it does stop the time as originally set when the screen worked. Trying to contact Hopscotch Technology for a remedy under their 1 year warranty ...

I think its the worst device ever. You take away childrens rights. It also is a scam! The people who make this device also make toys for kids to play outside with. All they want you to do is force your kids to play outside with the toys they make. This product IS A TERRIBLE DEVICE!!!
LINDA -- spring creek, NV   1/4/2012
This is exactly what I had been looking for. No more fighting about when to watch TV or play video games. Now when I want to turn it off I just push one button, not try wrestle the remote away from my son.
    Jean Drapeau -- Canada   11/9/2011
Doesn't turn off all the time. If you forget you password, no reset, no batterie inside the thing so you screwed. Avoid. Could damage computer or anything with a hard drive inside also. Bye a timer and lock it in a box instead, it will me less expensive and more efficient.
LUCY -- narre warren south, XX   12/18/2010
I live in australia, was not informed this product does not comply with AU standards so renders the product useless. Smarthome should inform customers of this before sending out electrical products, not happy at all with smarthome for not disclosing this information

It's a shame. This could have been a great product, if somebody had only set brain on when programming it. The biggest problem is the automatic power off detection. It is designed to detect that you have turned off the TV, and when it does so, it shuts itself off. The problem is, the feature is unreliable. So if you set it in "normal" mode, it is repeatedly "detecting" that you have turned off the TV right in the middle of your program, and cuts power. You can alternatively set it in "always on" mode, which will prevent it from turning off in the middle of your favorite program. However, a different problem arises. The device will "detect" (usually around 3am) that you have turned on the TV, and start beeping loudly and annoyingly for you to enter the code. Why didn't they simply have another mode, where you could disable this idiotic "feature"? But you're stuck with it, and there's no way to disable it. Another beef.. The range of management options is extremely limited. In particular, you have to specify a number of hours/minutes each week or day for each user. These are automatically added to the user's allotment. So far, so good. But why does it have to be on a "use it or lose it" basis? No matter what you put in there, anything you have left over at the end of the day or week is wiped out, and there's no way to change that "feature". This is a great way to encourage the concept of saving in you children.
    DAVID -- alpharetta, GA   3/25/2010
Keeping our two boys (9 and 13) to video game time limits has been quite a challenge. When I remembered to tell them their time is up, they always yelled up the stairs "I'm saving...". Then they would seem to forget and keep playing. I would often have to intervene and it wasn't fun. With BOB, there have been no issues from day one. I set it up, and told my boys their time limits and gave them their passwords. The results have been truly amazing! No complaining. No whining. They understand through BOB's alerts when they're getting near the end of their time and save on their on... then come running up the stairs with no complaining. They haven't begged for more time or complained. They just move on and go outside and play. This is an outstanding product that has brought a measure of peace, and civility back into the parenting process. It does not replace good parenting but does truly help augment it. I have recommended this product to every parent I know with kids my age and mentioned it to my parenting class at church. They all love the idea and are constantly asking how BOB is doing. I suspect we have several more BOBs in the congregation!

This has accomplished what we hoped for - helping the kids better self-monitor their TV time and remove us from the equation. Simple to use. Directions are also helpful though in suggesting implementation process with the kids.
    BLAKE -- lakewood, IL   3/23/2010
This is flexible and easy to use. It has resolved our household video game problems.
EVAN -- san diego, CA   3/23/2010
BOB continues to work great and does the job we hoped it would.
STEPHANIE -- crystal lake, IL   3/19/2010
We have found the BOB to be very useful to help our kids manage their TV time. We had tried the parental controls that came with our Direct TV service, but have found BOB to be much more flexible and helpful.
    MAX K. -- roy, UT   3/15/2010
We have owned this for about a month now. BOB has made my boys(ages 9-16)more aware of how much time they spent in front of a screen. Now, they spend more time reading, playing sports, interacting with family, etc. I actually see them now! BOB took 5 minutes to learn, boys input their own passwords, and that was it. Blocks work well, have not added of subtracted "fly time" but I assume it works simply, like the rest of BOB. This has taken a lot of emotion and argument out of who has played (or watched) what for how long. I had to talk my husband into this, partly because of the price, but we both agree, it is worth every penny. We wish we would have found it years ago. Unless you have kids so addicted that they "cut the cord" like I've seen on another review; this is a really nice product that helps your kids be more responsible and aware of time. It takes parents out of "the enforcer" mode. Speaking of price, we did find it on sale from Smarthome, through Amazon, for less than 65.00 shipped. Amazon footed the bill for the shipping.
AJIT -- aliso viejo, CA   3/1/2010
Thank you Bob. No more arguments at the house. Works well. What more can I say. Thank you again.
    HONGXIA -- bridgewater, NJ   2/27/2010
A great product for time control of TV time. On time shipment.
MR KENNETH T -- sierra madre, CA   2/20/2010
Very easy to set up and use. Turned a daily fight into something manageable. Now, TV is a reward, and not a right.
    NANCY L. -- rockville, MD   1/28/2010
I couldn't live without TV Bob. I know that sounds extreme, but with so much media and electronics these days TV Bob is a way for parents to take back control.
    ROBERT -- centerville, UT   1/28/2010
The product works very well. I encountered one problem. Our TV has a 3-prong plug with the cord coming out at 90 degree angle from the plug. This type of plug will not fit in the cord lock of this device so I had to use an extension cord, which defeats the purpose of the lock.
    Andres -- houston, TX   1/25/2010
My neighbour's kid has this device and the 13 yr old kid cut the wire and put his own A/C wall plug ! bypassing it. does somebody sell a steel braided cable tha cannot be cut ?
    PATRICK J O -- denver, CO   1/22/2010
It works as advertised, but I wish I could program it with different times by the day, rather than by the week.
