  • Controllable via a standard web browser
  • Easy integration into home automation systems

Essential Info

You've downloaded all your favorite music, so why limit your listening pleasure to the hours you spend at your PC? Turn your PC into a music server with the Exstreamer, a network MP3 player for digital audio streaming. By connecting an Exstreamer to your network-connected PC, you'll be able to play MP3s over your local area network.

Using a 10/100 Mbit Ethernet connection, the Exstreamer streams MP3s from your PC, digital audio server or Internet radio station to your stereo's powered speakers or to your network. The configurable Exstreamer can be easily controlled via a web browser interface using web-connected PCs, web pads, PDAs or simply by an IR remote control (sold separately). The Exstreamer is perfect for multiroom distributed audio systems as well as for commercial audio streaming applications since it supports various control and communication modes. Software developers can easily write audio applications using one of the well-documented Ethernet, serial or web based interfaces. To enjoy all of your favorite music all the Exstreamer requires is a PC and cat.5 cabling.

The Exstreamer is compatible with any dedicated music server that offers a standard web/http interface, or it can also be fed with a TCP data stream. You may adjust your settings for the control ports, IR source and IR gateway properties; simply define the ports on which the device will receive commands via UDP and TCP. Leaving the IP address at 0.0.0.0 and setting a valid port will broadcast the IR commands in the LAN. To direct to a specific device, just set the IP address of the device and the port. The Exstreamer can also be integrated into various control applications and home automation systems. Use the serial port on the Exstreamer to send control commands from a home automation system and other PC or embedded applications; the same control commands used on the serial port can be used as UDP or TCP commands over Ethernet.

For maximum ease of use, install Command Cubes Smart Home Jukebox software in your server computer. With Command Cubes, you'll be able to create playlists of up to 50,000 audio and video files, select by artist or genre, or even play random songs, whether throughout the network or to individual locations. The software is sold separately.

For use with a wireless LAN, try the Exstreamer Wireless. For digital output and best possible sound, try the Exstreamer Digital. The Instreamer converts analog and digital audio into MP3 streams and serves the network just like an ordinary Internet radio station. You can even add a Barix IR Remote for ease of use.

    The Exstreamer measures 3.15" x 1.77" x 4.37" (80mm x 45mm x 111mm) and weighs 320 grams.

I bought 3 of these products, if you use their virtual audio card driver combined with their multi-zone touch screen jukebox software called command cubes the smart home jukebox (www.CommandCubes.com) you can play different songs in different units at the same time. Without this jukebox software I found the hardware worked ok but their was not really any other good client software. I found combining the two make the perfect multizone jukebox.

While this unit is certainly not plug-and-play, and requires a fair amount of PC knowledge to implement, it has an un-advertised feature that is unique to all media players. By downloading the Virtual audio card (Beta Sw) from Barix, this device will play any audio stream coming from your PC, with no need for a media server. Link to any internet radio station via your browser and play it on your stereo. No cut and pasting of URL's to a server. The instruction manual is a bit ambiguous on this feature but it works great!
